Tomboy Notes

I like the way technology is heading towards simplifying the complexities of life.

Storing our basic information on the internet that can be accessed anywhere is one of those things. It's great to be able to access some things wherever you happen to be.

I'm somewhat cautious about storing all my important stuff on "The Cloud" which is code for somebody else's computer. This raises privacy concerns as well as allowing somebody to possibly hold my documents etc to ransom- a free service can easily be changed overnight to an expensive service.

Google allows me to store my contact information, appointments etc on one account that I can access at home, on my laptop and on my phone. That's great because I often enter email addresses or phone details on my computer but I may need to access them on my phone.

In my home computer I use Tomboy notes to store little bits of data that I need to get at quickly: To do lists, special orders for the bookshop, login details for some services, that kind of thing. Ubuntu has a system tray icon that allows quick access tothe application without having to start it up every tme you need to check something.

Today I discovered that there is an android app called Tomdroid that connects to Tomboy. The app uses the Ubuntu One cloud service which is free for up to 2 Gig of storage. So I can now synchronise notes made on my phone with those made on my desktop or laptop.

At the moment Tomdroid is a beta and can't edit notes, but that will be changed shortly.

Very nice!
