For the last two Good Fridays our church services have been outdoors. We erect a series of crosses around the lake, each with a depiction of a part of the story of Jesus' trial, suffering, death and resurrection. This is a modified version of the traditional Catholic Stations of the Cross, using just 9 stations.
So a relaxing 3 kilometre walk is combined with singing, prayer and meditation. It is an interesting combination of private and communal worship, as well as being out in the community.
We also leave the crosses out for the full Easter weekend, giving people who use the lake for recreational activities the opportunity to think about the meaning of Easter.
Last year we received lots of positive feedback from people who saw the crosses during the weekend. Best of all they were not vandalised in any way!
This morning we met up with some people coming the other way. We saw them looking at one of the crosses. It turned out that they were going for a walk, having just attended the Stations of the Cross service at the Catholic Church. They appreciated having the lessons in church reinforced outdoors.
Beautiful!
