Local Mystery

A man I haven't met rang me up this morning to tell me about the "Pretty Bird Tree". I've lived here for 21 years and have never heard of it. Apparently it's a tree on the bank of the Narrabri Creek where the local indigenous homeless and alcoholic people used to gather. I would be guessing that birds such as rosellas and grass parrots would settle in the tree.

The only information I have found out about it comes from a song by L. J. Hill who grew up in Narrabri. He describes himself as part Aboriginal, part American Cherokee and part Irish.

The tree is now just a stump, but it is the only stump on the town side of the creek bank. It looks like it might have been a very distinguished tree.

If anyone knows anything about the history or the significance of the tree, please let me know.

Here is the song by L.J. Hill. I will try to find the time to transcribe the lyrics soon. His album "Namoi Mud" is also available on Spotify.
