Redback bites woman in Japanese nursing home
By North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy

A woman at a Japanese nursing home has been bitten by a redback spider, with a search of the home uncovering 30 of the venomous Australian natives.

The 86-year-old woman was bitten on the leg at a nursing home in Fukuoka in the country's west.

After suffering from breathing problems, she was given anti-venom and her condition improved.

It has been reported that the redback may have originally made its way to Japan onboard a container ship, possibly one transporting woodchips.

Redbacks have been slowly multiplying in Japan, and about 10 people are bitten every year.
