Call For Spiritual Renewal

This sounds like great news for the Catholic Church, and for the church in gneral.

From the ABC:

Newly elected Pope Francis has warned the Catholic Church could be in danger of becoming a compassionate non-government organisation without spiritual foundations if it fails to undergo renewal.

In a mass in the Sistine Chapel on his first day as church leader, the pontiff reaffirmed the need to confess to Christ.

Addressing the cardinals who elected him as Latin America's first Pope, the 76-year-old Argentinian said the Church could "end up a compassionate NGO", using an Italian word that can also mean "pitiful".

"I would like all of us after these days of grace to have the courage to walk in the presence of the Lord," Francis said.

He warned the cardinals against "the worldliness of the Devil".

"Walking, building and confessing are not so easy. Sometimes there are tremors," he said, in a homily that will be scrutinised for clues to the style of his leadership.

Underlining the descriptions of the former archbishop of Buenos Aires as a humble man, a Vatican spokesman has told the media that after being presented as the new pontiff, Pope Francis took the bus with other cardinals back to their residence rather than taking the papal car.

During his meal with the cardinals, he reportedly told them, "may God forgive you for what you've done".

The new Pope made a point of visiting the hotel where he stayed before the conclave, paying the bill himself and thanking the staff.
