NSW father found guilty of procuring 12yo daughter as ‘child bride’ is sentenced to six years in jail

This is a good response to child abuse disguised as marriage and hidden under Islamic tradition.

From the ABC:

NSW father found guilty of procuring 12yo daughter as ‘child bride’ is sentenced to six years in jail

Updated 40 minutes ago

A New South Wales man who allowed his 12-year-old daughter to illegally marry in an Islamic ceremony has been sentenced to at least six years in jail.

The 63-year-old, who cannot be identified to protect the girl’s identity, was convicted in April of procuring his daughter for sex with a man, who was 26 at the time, and being an accessory.

Judge Deborah Sweeney said they were serious offences which cannot be excused by the man’s Islamic faith and the sentence needed to deter others from similar conduct.

The girl, now 13, was married to a 26-year-old man in a ceremony by a local sheikh at the family home in the Hunter Valley last year.

She miscarried after falling pregnant and the man she unlawfully married, now 27, has already been jailed for at least seven-and-a-half years.

Judge Sweeney said the man “failed in his duty as a father to protect his daughter”.

The court heard he viewed the marriage as a solution to the risk of his daughter committing sin and allowed the ceremony to go ahead, against the wishes of the child’s mother.

She described his actions as a breach of trust.

Judge Sweeney said he “lacks insight into his offending”.

She imposed a total sentence of eight years for both offences.

With time already served, the man, who has been an unemployed disability pensioner for the past 20 years, will first be eligible for parole in November 2020.

Reflection on Mark 6:30-34,53-56

Scripture
Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

Observation
The apostles return from their ministry tour and begin to tell Jesus all they have done. Jesus takes them away to a quiet place because the crowds a pressing in. The people follow them, and Jesus has compassion on them so He starts teaching them.

They cross the lake, and people instantly recognise Jesus. They run to bring the sick to be healed. All who touch Him are healed.

Application
Jesus is motivated by compassion for the people who seem to Him to be like lost sheep, All that He did in His earthly ministry was motivated by this deep love- whether He was healing, teaching or performing miracles.

Even His death on the cross was a result of His love for people who have lost the way to the Father. His love for me caused Him to lay down His life for me so that I can have eternal life.

What an awesome thought this is.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for your great love for me. Amen.

Too Many Christians, Not Enough Lions”

If you thought the same sex “marriage” push is all about love and tolerance, then this may change your mind.

From Life Site News:

Pro-gay activists react to gay ‘marriage’ resistance: ‘Too many Christians, not enough lions’

July 14, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) — There has been no shortage of anti-Christian rhetoric from various media outlets in the fallout from the Supreme Court decision decreeing homosexual “marriage” across the country.

“Too many Christians, not enough lions,” a derisive reference capitalizing on the Christians martyred in ancient Rome, was also how one LGBT activist responded to Catholic Vote’s (CV) pro-marriage “Not Alone”video, according to CV President Brian Burch.

Released the day of theObergefell v. Hodgesdecision, the CV video logged more than 1.3 million views in the first 10 days.

“Seeing the power of our message, LGBT activists have now mounted a massive campaign to mock, ridicule, and shame us,” Burch wrote to supporters. “They have used every curse word (and more) to attack us personally. They threatened our staff with phone calls. And now some are openly calling for the persecution of Christians.”

Defaming of Christians, and Christ, continuedover atThe Huffington Post, where a column by Jules Suzdaltsev titled “Was Jesus Gay?” was picked up July 8.

“After the Supreme Court’s historic ruling on gay marriage,” the column began, “it seemed like all the proudly homophobic Christians came out of the woodwork to talk about how much they still hate gay people.”

“As a straight Jew, the homophobia amongst Jesus’s followers has always struck me as a bit of a surprise,” Suzdaltsev wrote. “Worshipping at the feet of a ripped, hung man, seems at least a little homoerotic.”

The piece went on to make derogatory comments about the crucified Lord and conservatives.

The original July 6articlecame from the websiteVice, where the author interviewed openly homosexual pastor Bob Shore-Goss, first asking whether Shore-Goss thought Jesus Christ was gay.

“I would hope he is. I would project that he is,” Shore-Goss responded. “For my own spirituality, I would love to jump into bed with Jesus. At the very least, Jesus was queer.”

The piece then endeavoured to present biblical evidence of Jesus’s homosexuality, including asserting that St. Paul was a closeted homosexual.

Apple Could Have Bailed Out Greece

From the SMH:

Apple could have bailed Greece out twice

If you needed any more proof of the size of Apple’s pudding — and the absurd brand power the tech giant wields upon millions of iFans the world over — chew on this.

At last count, Apple had $US194 billion ($A262 billion) in cash and securities.

That’s enough to cover the €86 billion ($A128 billion) Greek bailout deal struck overnight twice over — with a cool $6 billion still left over to spend on gyros and ouzo.

Record sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have fuelled Apple's stock price.

And it’s all thanks to the iPhone.

According to wealth management firm Canaccord Genuity, in the first quarter of 2015 Apple reaped a whopping 92 per cent of the total operating income of the top eight smartphone manufacturers in the world, The Wall Street Journal reports.

That’s a 65 per cent jump on the previous year, fuelled by the September 2014 release of the iPhone 6, which produced record sales.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has stepped up the company's charitable efforts, but they look tiny compared to its profits.

Apple’s biggest competitor, South Korean manufacturer Samsung, reaped 15 per cent of profits out of the top eight manufacturers.

(No, we’re not numerically challenged; Cannacord says Apple and Samsung’s combined profits exceed 100 per cent because some of the top eight makers actually lost money on smartphones, including HTC and Microsoft, which just sacked thousands of staff from its mobile division).

While we’re on the topic of charity, it’s worth noting that Apple isn’t selling more smartphones than its competitors — its just charging (arguably) extortionate prices.

In fact, it has less than 20 per cent of the global smartphone market, per unit sold.

Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi says market share is a contentious point for Apple because it’s often measured in terms of how many handsets are sold, rather than the total profit reaped.

“This piece of [Canaccord] research is exactly the way Apple likes to see its market share, rather than by units,” he says.

Apple’s iron grip on its supply chain and bulk buying power allows it to reduce the prices of components, while its cornering of the “premium” smartphone market means it can get away with charging top dollar.

Its less about ripping people off, Fadaghi says, and more about tapping into the allure of “status” — and consumers’ undying desire to pay for it.

“If you look at other luxury brands they don’t convey the message of being ripped off to their consumers,” he says.

Apple’s not all smartphones, it’s true — it sells a few MacBooks here or there — but its gargantuan share price primarily hinges on those very profitable iPhone sales, Fadaghi says.

Despite its healthy profit margins, Apple has been criticised in the past for not being more philanthropic, particularly under the leadership of late co-founder Steve Jobs.

Since Tim Cook stepped up as chief executive in 2011, however, the company has been a little more generous — a few mill here, a few mill there; including more than $US50 million for organisations promoting diversity in the technology sector, announced in March.

Cook himself is also opening up the purse strings, pledging to give his $1 billion fortune to charity.

It could buy quite a few Greek islands, but it’s not nearly enough to stop the Greek economy sinking into the Agaean.

Reflection on 2 Samuel 7:1-17

Scripture
“Your house and your kingdom will endure for ever before me; your throne will be established for ever.”

Observation
David becomes concerned to build a Temple for the Lord. David is living in luxury, but the Ark of God remains in a tent.

At first Nathan the prophet tells David to go ahead, but the word of the Lord comes to Nathan and says the Lord doesn’t need a house built by David. In fact the Lord will build David a house- a dynasty that will rule the kingdom for ever.

Application
David wanted to build the Lord a Temple, but the Lord said He didn’t need anything that David could give Him. The Lord is the provider for David, not the other way around. The Temple would be built, but this was not David’s task.

God doesn’t make demands on us as if He is dependent on the things we can give Him or do for Him. His Lordship is one of invitation and grace. He lets us participate in His work and provides us with all that we need to serve Him, and more beside.

The secret to the christian life is learning to hear His invitation and to respond without fear or hesitation. It is then that we see the miracles unfold.

Prayer
Father, give me a sensitive ear and a willing heart to participate in your works of grace. Amen.

Stephen Mcalpine: Riotism: A Movement for the post-Christian West

Riotism

Ri/o/ti(s)m

noun:

  1. A subversive church community defined by a singular and holy commitment to Jesus and the faith once for all delivered to the saints as revealed by God through his Holy Word.
  2. An exuberant church community defined by a joyful and outwardly-focussed desire to share the gospel of the kingdom in word and deed with those who are lost, dying, hurting and rebellious.

Example of Riotism: These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also….and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus. (Acts17:6)

*******************

The western church of the early-mid twenty-first century will be a movement committed to what I call Riotism. It will have to be, or it risks not being a church at all.

Riotism is defined by a traditional understanding of salvation and the Bible, and a shameless assent to the credal statements of the early Church. It is defined by a firm, and courageous rejection of the new morality espoused by the world; a new morality, sadly,  being chased helter-skelter down the street by post-evangelical Christians in a vain attempt to prove just how right-on they are.

So what do I mean by Riotism? Is it worth another neologism in times such as this, when everyone is trying to find something new to say? Here are some thoughts:

Riotism: not Pietism

Riotism is no keep-it-to-yourself club that bunkers down, tips its lid to the world and tries to avoid trouble.  It is no “search within” Christianity that is content to let the world go to hell in a handcart, whilst sitting around the parlour fire reading Pilgrim’s Progress.

Riotism understands full well that wherever Jesus is proclaimed as Lord, the Caesar-du-jour is being challenged.  Riotism, whilst not going out of its way to placard and shout, establishes an alternate community within the wider community whose practices and values are not only strange to that wider community, but hostile in their very implications.  Not hostile in manner or approach, but by the fact they challenge every other Lordship, and refuse to be co-opted to Caesar’s cause.  Riotism should be misunderstood, mistrusted, misinterpreted, mistakenly attributed for evil, and missed  like crazy should it up stakes and leave the neighbourhood.

The Selective Outrage of the Media

Remember the fury at Joe Hockey’s “gaffe” about people getting a decent job to buy a house?

Where’s the anger when Bill Shorten says the same thing.

From Andrew Bolt:

Andrew Bolt

July 09 2015 (9:54am)

Treasurer Joe Hockey last month:

The starting point for a first homebuyer us to get a good job that pays good money… If you’ve got a good job that pays good money and you have security in relation to that job then you can go to the bank and you can borrow money.

Bill Shorten:

As if Joe Hockey hasn’t insulted families enough, he’s at it once more… This is ‘poor people don’t drive cars’ all over again. This isn’t just another Joe Hockey gaffe – this is proof he just doesn’t get the pressure families are facing.

Bill Shorten in the royal commission yesterday:

My aim always in any EBA was to try and provide more work and more regular remuneration so that people could have certainty of an income. Once you’ve got regular income, then you can get a car loan, then you can even dream of getting a house loan.

Reflection on Mark 6:14-29

Scripture
The king deeply regretted what he had said; but because of the vow he had made in front of his guests he couldn’t refuse her.

Observation
Everyone is talking about Jesus and speculating about his true identity. Herod believes that Jesus is John the Baptist resurrected.

Some time before this, Herod had John the Baptist imprisoned because John had criticised Herod’s marriage to Herodias. Herodias’ daughter had danced before Herod’s dinner guests, and he had vowed to give her whatever she asked for. At her mother’s instigation, she asked for the head of John the Baptist.

Application
Speaking up for righteousness can still be punished severely in a world that is opposed to the gospel.

The current flash point for christians in the West is same sex “marriage”. Where christians in good conscience cannot comply with the demands of the dominant culture they are imprisoned, fined or forced out of their job or business.

When confronting a sinful society we need to be aware of our ultimate destiny. We are people who live and die for eternity and not just for this life.

Our words and actions always have to be measured by the requirements of our Lord and not by the approval of the world.

Prayer
Father please help em to stand firm in you, even when the cost is high. Amen.

Reflection on Ephesians 1:1-14

Scripture
He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Observation
Before He made the world, God decided to adopt us into His family. He has poured out His grace upon us, purchasing our freedom with the blood of Christ.

Everything in the whole of creation will be brought under the authority of Christ. Because we are united with Christ we have an inheritance in Him.

God’s plan was to unite Jewish and Gentile believers together. As the sign that we belong to Him, He gave us the Holy Spirit, the guarantee of our salvation.

Application
It is so easy to underestimate God’s grace or to limit it to salvation. The fact is that God has poured out , and continues to pour out, blessing after blessing into our lives.

We were chosen from before the world began to be a part of God’s family, and He gives us the Holy Spirit as a sign of our identity in Christ. This is a guarantee that we will receive our inheritance in Him.

The overflowing abundant grace of God never runs out.

Prayer
Help me to appreciate, Lord, how great is your love for me. Amen.
