Reflection on Zechariah 14:1-21

Scripture

And the Lord will be king over all the Earth. On that day there will be one Lord – his name alone will be worshipped.

Observation

The Day of the Lord is coming. Nations will gather around Jerusalem to attack it. The Lord will rescue his people and fight against these nations.

Then the Lord will come. Sources of light will not shine, but there will be continuous day. Living waters will flow from Jerusalem to the Mediterranean and the Dead Seas.

The Lord will be king over all the Earth, and He alone will be worshipped.

The Lord will send a plague on the nations that attacked Jerusalem. Those who survive the plague will go to Jerusalem each year to worship the Lord.

Application

The Lord will be king over all the earth.

Every knee will bow before Jesus, every tongue will confess that He is Lord .

The religions and philosophies of the world will fade away to nothing, utterly demolished by the reality of Christ’s Kingdom.

This will not come without a cost. Zechariah’s prophecy speaks of an attack on Jerusalem before the Lord intervenes. After that, even those people who were opposed to the people of God will come for the annual festival.

The Kingdom of God is advancing day by day. We see set backs here and there, but every day there are more Christians in the world than the day before.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords. I give you my heart and soul. Use me as you wish. Amen.

Australia Day

January 26th is Australia Day, marking the day that the First Fleet of European Settlers arrived in Sydney Cove in 1788.

The usual suspects of radical left-wing haters have turned it into a day of division.

I love Australia and I love this day. I also love this quintessentially Aussie poem by Dorothea Mackellar, who lived not 100 miles from Narrabri.

My Country

The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me!

A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die –
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold –
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land –
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand –
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

Reflection on Zechariah13:I – 9

Scripture

“On that day a fountain will be opened for the dynasty of David and for the people of Jerusalem, a fountain to cleanse them from all their sins and impurity.”

Observation

The Lord will open a fountain or a spring of water that will cleanse people from their sins. He will erase idol worship throughout the land, false prophets, and the spirit of impurity.

False prophets will be put to death by their parents. Nobody will want to claim the prophetic gift.

The Lord’s shepherd will be struck down, and the sheep will be scattered. Two-thirds of the people will die, but the Lord will care for the remainder, refining and purifying them.

Application

God has opened up that fountain for the cleansing of His people. It is a fountain of blood, not of water.

The blood of Christ was poured out for everyone who chooses to receive Him. It brings cleansing and purification for everyone who follows in His way.

Unlike the sacrifices of the past, there is no need for endless repetition. One sacrifice, the Lamb of God, takes away the sins of the world.

How can we receive this cleansing and forgiveness?

We just have to ask for it!

What an awesome God we have!

Prayer

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for paying the price of my sins. By faith I receive your cleansing. Please help me to follow you for the rest of my life. Amen.

Maybe We Aren’t So Crazy

If you think the world is becoming crazier (like a teacher being sacked for failing to respect a student’s desire to be treated like a cat), think again. Apparently we are just acting out like any society that is overly wealthy and faces no external threats.

Take a look at this video. Warning: a couple of F’s get thrown in towards the end.
