Reflection on 1 Samuel 20:1-41

Scripture

Jonathan made David reaffirm his of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself.

Observation

David flees from Saul and meets up with Jonathon. He is afraid for his life as Saul has repeatedly threatened to kill David .

Jonathan does not believe this to be true. The next few days are the New Moon Festival, so Jonathan tests Saul during this time. When he mentions David’s name, Saul flies into a rage, throwing a spear at Jonathan.

Through a prearranged signal, Jonathan gives David the message to flee from Saul. David and Jonathan reaffirm their love for one another. David goes into hiding.

Application

Some people in the homosexual lobby try to claim the relationship between David and Jonathan as a sign that God is in favour of homosexuality. This is complete nonsense because two people can have deep affection and love for one another without any hint of sexual attraction. To treat this passage in this way is to completely misunderstand the meaning of the word love.

It must have really torn Jonathan to be at the centre if this rift between his father the king and David the anointed successor.

When we are in this position, the Lord can sometimes use us to reconcile people. At other times, all we can do is try to remain faithful in the midst of opposing forces.

It takes discernment and determination to stay firm in the Lord at these times

Prayer

Lord, please give me your wisdom when I am caught up in other people’s conflicts. May I be a sign of your presence. Amen.

Strange Fish Behaviour

I have several fish called Chromises in my aquarium. The photo above looks quite dull, but they are very colourful blue-green fish that like to school. A school of chromises looks quite fantastic.

While I was feeding the fish on Saturday, one of these guys swam rapidly to the surface (they do feeding frenzy really well) then shot to the bottom of the tank, hitting a piece of rock on the way. Then it lay flat on the sand at the bottom, not moving for some time.

I always expect the worst, and I thought the impact must have killed it. However, an hour or so later, the fish was missing from its previous resting place and was happily swimming around.

What was weird was that there was now something like a clear plastic ring around its mouth. You could see that it was able to open and close its mouth OK, but there was this strange thing right on the front of its face. Had it picked up some plastic refuse from my tank?

The next morning the fish was back to normal appearance. I think that it must have given itself the fishy equivalent of a fat lip in its strange accident.

A few days later and it is still right as rain. The incident is something of a mystery.

Europe Shuts Down Due To “Green Energy”

Australia is not far behind as we lurch towards the madness of “Net Zero”

#d6b15c">UK close to nation wide blackout, while 12% of entire Germany GDP paying for energy crisis

By Jo Nova

Green Europe is running out of electrons

Last Monday in Great Britain the entire steel industry shut down because the wind stopped and wholesale prices reached £2,586 a megawatt-hour.  As winter cranks up, British factories are getting ready to shutdown, as the threat of small, medium and blockbuster blackouts loom. In the fifth largest economy in the world, thousands of people are using communal warm spaces because they can’t afford electricity any longer, and the largest North Sea gas producer has decided not to drill for more gas just when the country needs it. The government has slapped a new tax on it, thus achieving the exact opposite of what the government aimed for.

Meanwhile over in Germany one eighth of the entire national economy is now consumed with paying for the energy crisis of 2022. They tried to hold back the seas in 2100 but forgot to secure their own electricity a year in advance.

These are very expensive experiments

They aren’t telling you this but UK is close to nationwide blackouts

UK Flag, Britain, United Kingdom.

But the one nobody is discussing is the real possibility the lights could go out. Two stories this week should set the alarm bells ringing. The first was that Drax had been ordered to put its (mothballed) two coal-fired power stations in North Yorkshire on standby. The second came yesterday when a power cut left 2,800 homes in Shetland without electricity. In one of the coldest snaps in recent history where energy use has been peaking, they underpinned a briefing received by Express.co.uk that Britain is teetering on the edge of a catastrophe.

According to someone close to Mr Rees-Mogg [former Business and Energy Secretary], his conclusion was: “If the lights don’t go out this winter or next it will be more luck than judgement.”

His assessment, confirmed by a Whitehall source, was the margins of available energy supply to need were so low that “just one major problem would be enough for the lights to go out.”

The reality is that Whitehall sources and former ministers have confirmed to the Daily Express the well-intentioned headlong pursuit for Net Zero carbon emissions has left the UK in a precarious position.

After becoming the minister Rees-Mogg apparently had to badger staff for two whole weeks just to get an inventory of Britain’s energy supplies. Were they slow because they didn’t want to give him the bad news, or because they had never added them up?

Britain braces for winter of factory shutdowns as freezing conditions strain energy crisis
Jacob Paul, Daily Express

Gareth Stace, director of industry association UK Steel, told the Telegraph that the eye-watering wholesale electricity prices on Monday forced all his members to shut down some production until rates went back to normal.

He said: “We’re just priced out of the market. There would be no point in the energy companies telling our members to turn off, because they know that they will. You just couldn’t keep going, you just lose money for every tonne of steel you make with [energy] prices at these levels.”

Think of what €440 billion euro’s could have done instead?

German FlagThat’s how much Germany has spent on energy bailouts and schemes since Russia invaded Ukraine. And it probably doesn’t include another 100 billion euro money bomb that was just approved in the German lower house.

Germany’s half-a-trillion dollar energy bazooka may not be enough

Reuters

Michael Groemling at the German Economic Institute (IW) said… “The national economy as a whole is facing a huge loss of wealth.”

The money set aside stands at up to 440 billion euros ($465 billion), according to the calculations, which provide the first combined tally of all of Germany’s drives aimed at avoiding running out of power and securing new sources of energy.

That equates to about 1.5 billion euros a day since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. Or around 12% of national economic output. Or about 5,400 euros for each person in Germany.

They could have bought 20 nuclear reactors and secured half their electricity supply for decades to come.

Trump warned about this in 2018, but this trainwreck has been coming for twenty years.

Reflection on 1 Samuel 19:1-24

Scripture

On the way to Naioth in Ramah, the Spirit of God came even upon Saul, and he began to prophesy all the way to Naioth.

Observation

Saul urges his servants and Jonathan to assassinate David. Jonathan talks to his father about this, and persuades him that he should not do it. Saul relents for a time .

Some time later, under the influence of a tormenting spirit, Saul again e tries to kill David. David flees, so Saul sends soldiers to arrest him. Michal tricks them and allows David to flee to Ramah to see Samuel.

Saul sends troops to Naioth where David is living. As they approach Naioth, they see Samuel leading a company of prophets. The Spirit of God comes upon the troops and they prophesy.

Saul goes to Naioth, and the Spirit falls on him also, causing him to prophesy.

Application

Saul was on his way to murder David, the man chosen by God to be the king. And the Spirit of God came upon him.

This is very odd. Did the Spirit come upon him to overcome him, to subdue him, or to convict him of sin? We are not told.

People sometimes say that God cannot abide the presence of sin, but he is much tougher than that. If this were true, God would have abandoned the Earth long ago. Jesus could never have taken on human form and lived amongst a sinful people.

The Spirit of God comes upon Saul, and Saul prophesies. We would expect that Saul would have to think seriously about his relationship with the Lord and how he was acting towards towards David. Apparently he did not. Even even though Saul was now a prophet, he was far from God.

Prayer

Lord, it is sobering to think that a man can be far from you but still manifesting the presence of the Holy Spirit. Please help me to maintain a pure heart before you. Amen.
