Reflection on Matthew 26:57-76

Scripture

Jesus replied, “You have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of Heaven.”

Observation

Jesus is taken to the home of Caiaphas, the high priest. Peter follows at a distance.

The leading priests in the Sanhedrin try to find witnesses who will agree in their testimony. Finally, they find two who claim that Jesus had said He would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days.

Jesus remains silent in the face of these charges. Then the high priest demands that Jesus confirms if He is the Messiah. Jesus does confirm this.

In the courtyard, Peter is confronted on three occasions that he is a follower of Jesus. He denies this each time, but then the rooster crows. He remembers that Jesus had foretold this. He goes away, weeping bitterly.

Application

Jesus is utterly vulnerable, at the mercy of the Jewish leaders.

He responds to the question. Are you the Messiah? He says that he is the Messiah, and that they will see him sitting in glory at the Father’s right hand.

There is a great irony in this situation. They see a man who is under their control. Jesus says He is the one who reigns over all things with God the Father.

What we see of Jesus depends on faith. The facts are the same, but our interpretation depends on faith.

Is Jesus really the Messiah?

Is Jesus really alive?

Is Jesus reigning with the Father?

Prayer

Thank you, Jesus, for dying for me, and for rising from the dead. I praise you for you are the King of Glory. Amen.

Quote for the Day

Truly, the Evangelical church is at a crossroads. We must choose if we will follow a more culturally amenable position or a more orthodox, biblically sound approach to faith and culture. Joseph Mattera

Reflection on Matthew 26:47-56

Scripture

“Don’t you realise I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and He would send them instantly? But if I did that, how would the scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen next?”

Observation

Judas, along with a crowd of armed men comes, and he greets Jesus with a kiss, the pre-arranged signal of who must be arrested. So the men arrest Jesus, but one of Jesus’s followers pulls out a sword and slashes off the ear of the high priest’s slave.

Jesus tells His followers to put away their weapons. The Father could send a thousand angels to protect them. But for now, they must allow God’s plan to unfold.

Then, as Jesus is taken away, the disciples flee.

Application

Jesus was not helpless as He was arrested in the garden. He could have summoned a legion of angels to rescue Him. But this was not God’s course for Him.

Having prayed in the garden for the strength to take the cup of suffering, He must now proceed to the cross.

It is an awesome thought to consider that the cross was God’s idea, and that obedience was Jesus’ path to exaltation.

He could have refused the cross at any time. He could literally have transported Himself away from the place of suffering. But then we would not be saved, We would still be lost in our sins.

It is because of His love that He willingly embraced the cross.

Prayer

Thank you. Jesus for setting me free from sin. Your suffering open the way for my salvation. Hallelujah! Amen.
