Reflection on Luke 15:11-32

Scripture

“We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost but now he is found.” So the party began

Observation

To illustrate the point that God loves sinners, Jesus tells the famous story about the prodigal son.

A man had two sons. The younger one demands his share of the family inheritance. He goes away and spends it all on wild living .

This son finds himself in a desperate circumstances and eventually goes home to his father. He realises he deserves nothing from his father, but at least the servants are better off than him.

He goes home. The father runs to meet him, overwhelmed with joy that his lost son has returned.

Big brother is not happy. He has slaved away and never had a party in his honour. But the father points out that the son has always had access to the father and to everything he owns. The younger son, in contrast, was like a dead man who has come back to life.

Application

God loves a party! All through the Bible we find references to feasts and festivals. Of course, the biggest party ever will take place in Heaven when we are all reunited with the Father.

Here in Jesus’ story, there is a father who celebrates the return of his wayward son. There are no lectures or recriminations, no punishment or probation. It’s all joy and celebration.

I’ve never had any children go off the rails. I do have some who moved a long way from home, and it is always a joy when they come back.

My joy is just a tiny fraction of the joy God feels when a sinner turns around and comes back to Him.

Prayer

Lord, I thank you for this expression of the joy that you experienced in your family. May I always make you happy. Amen.

Reflection on 2 Corinthians 5:11-21

Scripture

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun.

Observation

Paul recognises the fearful responsibility the Lord has laid on him, so he works hard to persuade other people.

Christ died for all, so we have all died to our old life. He died for all so that those who receive the new life will live for Christ and not for themselves.

Everyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The old life is gone, and a new life has begun. All of this is God’s gift. God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself.

We are Christ’s ambassadors. We speak for Christ when we urge people to turn to the Lord.

Application

When I became a Christian, I became a new person. The old life came to an end and a new life began.

I am not held in captivity by my old nature. No, I am set free to live the perfect and righteous life that God intended for me. I am free to live to the glory of God.

Of course, I have not yet learnt how to live in perfection. Like a horror movie, my old nature keeps reaching out to reclaim me.

Thankfully, God is gracious. He continues to forgive my sins, not counting them against me. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.(See 1 John 1:9)

Prayer

Thank you Jesus for raising me to a new life. My old life is gone and a new life is here. Hallelujah! Amen.

Reflection on Joshua 5:1-12

Scripture

The very next day they began to eat unleavened bread and roasted grain harvested from the land. No manna appeared on the day they first ate from the crops of the land, and it was never seen again. So from that time on, the Israelites ate from the crops of Canaan.

Observation

The Lord tells Joshua to circumcise the Israelite men. All the men who had been old enough to fight in battle when they left Egypt had been circumcised, but they were now dead. The next generation born in the wilderness had not been circumcised.

The Lord then says to Joshua,”Now I have rolled away the shame of your slavery in Egypt.”

There at Gilgal, the Israelites celebrate Passover for the first time in the Promised Land. The next day they begin to eat unleavened bread and roasted grain harvested from the land. That day, the manna stops and is never seen again.

Application

Gods provision of manna over the forty years in the wilderness had never failed. Like clockwork, every morning except the Sabbath, it appeared.

Suddenly, this free gift is taken away, because it is no longer needed. Instead, God has provided for them grain ready to be harvested, His first provision in the land flowing with milk and honey.

Gods provision is always adequate for what we need. When one form of provision ends, another takes its place.

He is faithful. He loves us and desires to meet our needs .

We never have to be afraid that He will let us down.

Prayer

Thank you Father for your extraordinary grace. In you I will always have enough. Amen.

Reflection on Luke 13:1-9

Scripture

“Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered? Not at all! you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.”

Observation

Jesus is informed that some Galileans were murdered by Pilate in the Temple. He asks if they think these particular people were worse sinners than others. He tells them they too will perish unless they repent of their sins.

Similarly, the people who perished when a tower fell on them in Jerusalem were no worse sinners than anyone else.

Jesus then tells a parable about a man who planted a fig tree in his garden. He was disappointed by its lack of fruitfulness. Finally, he tells his gardener to cut the tree down. The gardener asks the owner to give the tree another chance; he will take special care and fertilise it, and it should do better the next year – if not, they can cut it down then.

Application

A common response to feeling convicted about sin is to compare ourselves to other people. We might think we are not as bad as that person. If someone is struck down by tragedy, we might wonder if they did something to deserve it.

Jesus rightly draws our attention to ourselves. We need to repent of our own sins and turn to God rather than wondering about the sins of others. Yes, other people do bad things too, but that does not make us righteous.

God is not slow to punish sinners. The parable of the barren fig tree shows that He is always wanting to give us another chance to repent.

But the time will come when the last chances run out, and we have to give an account to God for our sins.

Prayer

Thank you Lord for your loving kindness. You always show grace to those who turn to you. Thank you. Amen.

Reflection on 1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Scripture

The temptations in your life and no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Observation

The ancestors who went through the wilderness were guided by a cloud moving ahead of them. They were baptised in the sea and in the cloud. A rock followed them, providing water in the dry places.

The history in the wilderness is given as a warning to us in the end times. They celebrated by indulging in pagan revelry and 23,000 died in one day. They put God to the test and died of snake bites. They grumbled against God and were destroyed by an angel of death.

The temptations we face are no different to what others experience. God is faithful. He will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can stand. He will show us a way out so we can endure.

Application

We often think that our temptations are unusually strong, and that is why we fail. We live in a society that is obsessed with sex, possessions, and pride. These things are all around us and make it hard to stay faithful to Christ. But many societies have shared the same obsessions and perversions.

C.S. Lewis reminds us that temptation only seems strong when we give in to it. When we resist and overcome it, we realise how ludicrously weak it is.

Temptation only has the power over us that we yield to it.

Even in our greatest struggles, God is with us. The Holy Spirit provides a way to stand and and endure. We have the Holy Spirit in us, and so we have direct access to the Holy One who makes us holy.

Prayer

Lord, I confess to you my weakness in withstanding temptation. I give in far too quickly. Please help me to stand firm in you. Amen.

Reflection on Isaiah 55:1-9

Scripture

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “and my ways are far beyond anything you can imagine. Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

Observation

Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink the finest wine or milk. in God’s Kingdom, it’s all free. Listening to the Lord is like feasting on the best food.

As we listen to the Lord, he transforms us. He gives us authority to command other people and He shares His glory with us.

Seek the Lord while he is near. Those who are wicked should repent while there is time.

The Lord’s ways are nothing like the ways of people. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.

Application

Could we imagine that the God who is high and lifted up would become a human being? Could we think that this God who is so holy and righteous would die on a cross to bring us back to Him?

Gods ways are beyond our ability to imagine. He is consumed by love for us and would do anything to win us back to Himself.

We try to what God might do. We place limits on Him, assuming that He thinks like we do.

Gods ways are infinitely higher than our ways.

This is why it is never good to”pray answers”, that is to tell God how to sort things out. No, He can always bring about answers to prayers that we could not imagine.

Prayer

Thank you Lord that your ways are so much higher than my ways. Please help me to trust you in all things. Amen.

Reflection on Luke 13:31-35

Scripture

Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and on the third day I will accomplish my purpose.”

Observation

Some Pharisees come and tell Jesus that Herod Antipas wants to kill him. Jesus replies that He will keep on casting out demons and healing the sick, and on the third day he will accomplish His purpose. He must continue to Jerusalem because this is the place prophets are killed.

Jesus wanted to gather the children of Jerusalem together as a hen gathers her chicks, but they rejected him, and now they will never see him until they say “Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord.”

Application

As opposed to the fox, Herod Antipas, Jesus is proving the reality of His kingdom by healing the sick and casting out demons.

Jesus labels Herod Antipas as a pest and someone who is just in power for himself. Jesus’ Kingdom on the other hand, brings healing and salvation.

The kingdom of God sets itself up in opposition to all earthly kingdoms. It forces us to ask who is really the Lord, the one who has our loyalty.

To be a christian means that we do not look to government to save us, but to Jesus.

Prayer

Thank you Jesus that your Kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom. Please help me to serve you faithfully. Amen.

Reflection on Luke 4:1-13

Scripture

He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.

Observation

Immediately after His baptism, the Holy Spirit direct Jesus into the wilderness where He is tempted for forty days.

At the end of this time, when Jesus is very hungry, the devil provokes Jesus to turn some stones into bread to prove His Sonship. Jesus rebukes satan with scripture.

Next, the devil takes Jesus up to a high place to reveal to Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. This will be given to Jesus if He worships Satan. Again Jesus rebukes him with scripture.

The devil takes Jesus to the highest place of the Temple and says He should jump off so tha the angels will come and rescue Him. Again Jesus rebukes satan with scripture.

Finally the devil leaves Jesus.

Application

I can’t imagine what forty days of temptation must have been like for Jesus, alone with satan in the wilderness. It must have been intense as satan tried to get Jesus to sin or even just deviate from the path that the Father had set for Him.

I have been through times of torrid temptation. It would seem to be so easy to walk away from God’s calling, but I recognised what was happening.

Less obvious, and so easier to miss, are the lesser temptations. Satan entices us to seek something, to compromise just a little, to lose control or to give in to our passions.

Jesus is our great High Priest. He has been tempted in every way, just like us, but he did not sin. He understands the pressures that satan and the world put on us. He has compassion and forgives us readily when we turn back to Him.

Prayer

Thank you Jesus for this assurance that you know what temptation is like and you understand my weakness. Please help me to stay strong in you. Amen.

Reflection on Romans 10:1-13

Scripture

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Observation

Paul longs for the people of Israel be saved. They are zealous for God but don’t understand that Christ has accomplished all that the law was given for.

Moses writes that the law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to the commandments.

The message of God is this: if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Believing makes us right with God and confessing Jesus as Lord saves us. Jews and Gentiles have the same means of salvation. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Application

The gospel message is simple. God has provided the means of salvation through Christ’s death on the cross. As Paul writes it here, we have to confess a Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead.

No complicated rituals and costly sacrifices. The Lord has provided a sacrifice beyond price.

This is God’s love in action. He did not want any person to perish, so He sent Christ into the world to pay the price for our sins.

Now, everybody who truly believes that Christ is alive and they confess aloud that Jesus is their Lord, they will be saved.

Promoted from the kingdom of darkness to the light of God’s glorious grace. Rescued from the destiny of eternal torment and put on the road to heaven and eternal joy.

Our God is a loving and gracious God.

Prayer

Thank you Lord for the good news of salvation. You have rescued me from the dominion of darkness. Hallelujah!

Reflection on 2 Corinthians 3:7-18

Scripture

If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God!

Observation

The old way had its laws etched in stone and led to death. Even in the old way, Moses was so close to God that his face shone with the glory. Now we have the Holy Spirit and we should expect even greater glory.

We are not like Moses who veiled his face so that the people of Israel would not see the glory. Their minds were hardened, so that the same veil still covers their minds, and they cannot receive the truth. Only Christ can remove the veil.

Whenever a person turns to Christ, the veil is taken away. The Spirit of the Lord brings freedom, so that everyone who is in Christ can see the glory and reflect the glory of the Lord.

Application

The old way, the way of the law, brings death and condemnation. The way of Christ brings life and freedom.

Moses would talk to the lord face to face, and his face would light up with the glory of God.

We who are redeemed by Christ have the Holy Spirit in us all the time. We can talk face to face at any time, and our faces therefore reflect the glory of God.

Moses had only a partial fellowship with God. We have full fellowship with Him. We have an intimate relationship, a deep friendship with our God because of what Christ has done for us.

Prayer

Thank you Lord for the greater glory you give to your people. Amen
