With a single exception (husbands/fathers) Paul lays a series of demands on family members by appealing to the authority of the Lord Jesus. Seven times in just a few verses he makes reference to Jesus in his role as kyrios. As kyrios Jesus becomes the basis for wives’ respectful demeanors to their husbands, children’s obedience to their parents, slaves’ service to their masters, and masters’ just treatment of their slaves. If “Jesus is Lord,” then this provides the basis for addressing his followers as servants/slaves. If Jesus is Lord of the cosmos, his authority extends to day-to-day details in the lives of those who belong to him. David Capes
