Reflection on Genesis 1:1-2:3

creation

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+1:1-2:3

Scripture

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Observation

In the beginning God created. Over six days, God set about forming a bleak and dull universe into something beautiful and capable of sustaining life.

There is a method, a process, of firstly forming the heavens, the water and sky, and the earth, and then filling them.

At the end of the sixth day, God proclaims it is very good, and then sets aside the seventh day as the Sabbath rest.

Application

In the beginning God…

God is at the beginning of creation. Nothing is made without Him. Nothing lasts without Him.

Our lives should be the same- every plan, every thought , every deed should find its beginning in God. It is when we move away from the source of all things that we move towards sin and death.

In the beginning God created…

It is in God’s nature to create, to bring into being things that were not. We are created in God’s image, and therefore we are creators. Every human being has the capacity to create things- art, poetry, movies, buildings, inventions, more people.

When we believe that we are not creative, then we are in bondage to sin- satan has lied to us about our destiny and our purpose.

In my lifetime, I have seen an explosion in wealth around the globe due to creativity. Some of this is in harnessing God’s creation (agriculture and mining), some of it from turning God’s creation into human creation (industry), but much of it is in services where human ingenuity is harnessed, for example in the software that runs our apps and internet services. Financial services multiply wealth when money- intrinsically valueless in itself- generates more money as it is transformed into different states.

Creativity is a blessing from the Lord the creator. It is an exceptional sign of the image of God in human beings.

Of course, due to sin we can corrupt this to destructive and sinful ends. God calls us to build up not pull down and to create not destroy.

Prayer

Lord God, how amazing it is to think that before all things came into being, you were there. How awesome to contemplate that this world, for all its problems, is a product of your design and not a chance arrangement of atoms. Amen.

Hal G.P. Colebatch: The prophets of eco-doom: a perfect record of failure

CULTURAL HISTORY
The prophets of eco-doom: a perfect record of failure

by Hal G.P. Colebatch

News Weekly, June 3, 2017

Environmentalism, or at least its deep-green variety, has, by the clownishly failed predictions of its gurus and prophets, confirmed its place as a leader among those “sciences” in which a complete lack of factual accuracy bears not the slightest relationship to its proponents’ reputations or careers.

“Earth Day” was conceived 47 years ago, time enough for any catastrophic threats to the Earth forecast then to have materialised. At that time the late George Wald, a Nobel Laureate and professor of Biology at Harvard, predicted: “Civilisation will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.”

It didn’t.

The problems facing civilisation come chiefly from uncivilised men who denude landscapes by chopping down trees for fuel. Civilised men have available safe, clean nuclear energy, and if they live in a country like Australia, the means to quiet superstitious fears by building reactors in deserts.

At the same time as Professor Wald’s predictions of universal doom, Professor Paul Ehrlich of Stanford University boosted his bank account with the best seller, The Population Bomb. This declared that the world’s population would soon outstrip food supplies. He stated that the “battle to feed humanity” was lost. In 1969 he told Britain’s Institute of Biology: “If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.”

The ludicrous nature of this doom mongering, looked back at from 2017, should speak for itself. Ehrlich was peddling a sort of doom pornography.

If anyone had taken it seriously, rather than as a subject for a cheap thrill, they would have been laying down stocks of food, guns and ammunition, and, like some American “survivalists” (whose fears came from a different direction), preparing refuges in the Outback against the coming Armageddon. On that first Earth Day, Ehrlich warned: “In 10 years, all important animal life in the sea will be extinct.”

Instead of being sacked from his chair, or being offered a job as a circus clown, since then, showing the limitless human appetite for flim-flam, Ehrlich has won no fewer than 16 awards, including the 1990 Crafoord Prize, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ highest award. As that well-known social philosopher Charles Manson put it: “You can convince anyone of anything if you push it to them all the time.”

In an article for The Progressive, Ehrlich predicted: “The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next 10 years.”

Of course, the first influential proponent of ecological doom was Thomas Malthus, the first edition of whose Essay on the Principle of Population was published in 1798. Neither Malthus nor Karl Marx, with the Theory of Increasing Misery, foresaw that improved agricultural and industrial production and technology would lead to the Earth being able to support populations many times larger and at a much higher level than they imagined.

Thus, with the “green revolution” allowing at least countries with good governments to feed themselves, a new hobgoblin was called for. How many of us remember that in the 1970s the existential threat hanging over mankind was not global warming but global cooling?

In International Wildlife of July 1975, one Nigel Calder warned: “The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind.” In Science News the same year, C.C. Wallen of the World Meteorological Organisation is reported as saying: “The cooling since 1940 has been large enough and consistent enough that it will not soon be reversed.”

In 2000, climate researcher David Viner told The Independent that within “a few years”, snowfalls would become “a very rare and exciting event” in Britain. “Children just aren’t going to know what snow is,” he said. “Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past.” In the following years, Britain saw some of its largest snowfalls and lowest temperatures since records started being kept in 1914.

In 1970, ecologist Kenneth Watt told a Swarthmore College audience: “The world has been chilling sharply for about 20 years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990 but 11 degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”

2000 has come and gone, and there is no ice age in sight.

Also in 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson wrote in Look magazine: “Dr S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian, believes that in 25 years [ie, by 1995], somewhere between 75 and 80 per cent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.”

A chart in Scientific American that year estimated that mankind would run out of copper shortly after 2000. Lead, zinc, tin, gold and silver would disappear before 1990. In 1974 the U.S. Geological Survey said that the U.S. had only a 10-year supply of natural gas.

J. Lee Grady: 6 Signs of a Toxic ‘Apostle’

From Charismamag.com, J. Lee Grady warns of toxix “apostles.” I’m glad my apostle is the real deal and is the opposite of this.

6 Signs of a Toxic ‘Apostle’

Untrained, untested leaders often result in spiritual abuse, false doctrines and financial corruption. (Getty Images)

I’ve just spent two weeks in South America, where the Holy Spirit is moving in unprecedented ways. Churches are growing and average Christians are sharing their faith passionately. One recent Pew Research study showed that 1 in 5 Latin Americans now identifies as an evangelical Christian—and a majority of these are Pentecostals.

But this growth is not without problems. While there are certainly many healthy Christian movements in the region, other churches are suffering from a lack of trained leadership. And untrained, untested leaders often result in spiritual abuse, false doctrines and financial corruption.

I’ve become more concerned lately with leaders who declare themselves “apostles” when they have no business wearing that label. I believe true apostolic leadership is needed today, but a small army of imposters is threatening to damage the work of God. It is time to heed the apostle Paul, who warned of “false apostles” and “deceitful workers” who were “disguising themselves as apostles of Christ” (2 Cor. 11:13).

Discerning the difference between a true and false apostle is not complicated. Since Scripture clearly tells us that Paul is our apostolic model (see 1 Cor. 4:16), we can use his surrendered life as our standard. Here are six signs that a man or woman who claims apostolic leadership is actually a dangerous influence in the church.

Third Gravitational Wave Detected

From the ABC:

Third gravitational wave detection puts new spin on black holes

For the third time, physicists have detected a gravitational wave: a tiny ripple in the fabric of space-time.

Like the two previous detections, it comes from two colliding black holes, but this pair is much further away and may have been spinning in different directions.

Key points

  • Third confirmed gravitational wave detected on January 4, 2017
  • Wave produced by two black holes 3 billion light-years away — twice the distance of previous discoveries
  • Search is now on to find gravitational waves from other sources

The discovery, reported today in the journal Physical Review Letters, has important implications for our understanding of black holes, dark matter and the early Universe.

It was made on January 4 this year, when an international research team picked up the infinitesimal wobble produced by two black holes, 3 billion light-years away, spiralling towards each other and eventually merging to form a bigger black hole 50 times the mass of the Sun.

Study co-author Professor Susan Scott said the signal offered fresh and intriguing insights.

“The black holes are not necessarily lined up,” said Professor Scott, of the Australian National University, one of several Australian universities involved in the research.

In a binary system like this, the two black holes each rotate on their own axis, as well as circling each other in space.

According to Professor Scott, the new findings offer the first evidence that those individual spins might not always be aligned.

She said the discovery was “a very significant advancement” because it provided some insight into how double black hole systems evolved.

“It’s also interesting because black holes of the types of masses that we’ve found could actually be black holes from the very early Universe and contribute significantly to the dark matter in the Universe,” she said.

The gravitational wave was detected using the LIGO observatories 3,000 kilometres apart in Livingston, Louisiana and Hanford, Washington.

Each instrument uses laser beams to constantly measure the lengths of two perpendicular 4km pipes, with stunning accuracy; tiny, fleeting changes in length can reveal a passing gravitational wave.

In 2015 the same 1,000-strong team of scientists detected gravitational waves from black holes 1.3 billion and 1.4 billion light-years away. Those historic discoveries were confirmed and reported in 2016.

At 3 billion light-years, the new discovery is more than twice as distant.

Apostolic Summit

It’s been a fantastic few days at the Apostolic Summit here at Rockhampton, the 20th Summit.

The speakers were John Alley and Bob Hausleman. Bob Hauselman is the Senior Minister of Restoration Christian Church in Sellersburg, Indiana, and also the Apostle in charge of ARM Network. Both of these men are influential in their respective ministries, carrying a lot of spiritual authority but with great humility.

The theme of the Summit was “Exploring Apostolic Authority.” This is not just about the authority which apostles carry within their own gifting, but the authority given to the church when apostolic order is in place. Many stories were told by the two main speakers and cameo speakers such as Lloyd Gill and Ross Blamey who has the “Kick up the backside anointing.”

We caught up with our favourite ex-Narrabri teenager, Choni Smith. Choni led us to the Rockhampton Zoo.

ABC: Stowaway Snails Devastate Crops

If you ever watch those Customs shows and wonder why Australia is so tough on people bringing stuff into the country this might help.

From the ABC:

Stowaway snails become big pest for Yorke Peninsula farmers as expert warns of bumper year

Updated 38 minutes ago

Slimy invaders from afar have long been a staple of science fiction, thrilling and chilling audiences. Slimy invaders as a fact of farming life are much less entertaining.

Every season, before he starts seeding, Yorke Peninsula farmer Graham Hayes has to lay snail bait.

If he doesn’t do so, his crop will be destroyed by millions of Mediterranean snails.

“Well if they are in large enough numbers they’ll just eat all of the crop,” Mr Hayes said.

“There’s nothing that we grow that we can avoid having troubles with snails … if it grows, they’ll eat it.”

Those “troubles” occur right across the growing period.

In the early stages, while a crop is still green, Mr Hayes said the snails would eat it.

When the crop ripens, snails get caught up in harvesters: clogging the machinery and contaminating the grain

CSIRO scientist Geoff Baker is Australia’s foremost snail expert, having spent three decades musing over the molluscs.

He has warned this year has the potential to be a bumper snail season, for two main reasons — the recent wet and mild summer, and the snails’ ability to juggle their breeding cycles.

“This is a bet-hedging strategy that the snails use, and many other invertebrate animals use, where they’ll sit tight if the weather’s not great for reproducing or they’ll go gangbusters if it is great,” Dr Baker said.

“And that, unfortunately, is what this season is looking like.”

The snails arrived on Yorke Peninsula more than a century ago, as slippery stowaways aboard sailing ships coming to collect grain.

Dr Baker said there were four distinct species of snail.

Generically they are all called the Mediterranean snail because of where they originated.

“They have distributions all the way from Scotland down to Morocco from Portugal through to the Middle East,” Dr Baker said.

“So there’s a big, wide distribution, they’ve come accidentally to Australia and they’ve become a problem.

“They’ve hit pay dirt, they’ve escaped the natural enemies that have a huge impact on their abundance in their native habitat.”

Reflection on John 14:15-22

John 14-20 You WIll Know That You Are In Me And I Am In You blue.jpg

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passsage/?search=John+14.15-22

Scripture

“On that day you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.”

Observation

Jesus tells the disciples that if they love Him they will obey His commands. He will send the Comforter, the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him because the world does not know Him.

Jesus is going, but because He lives we also will live. We will know the unity of the Father with the Son and with us.

Application

Often we fail to understand the true unity of the believer with God through the Holy Spirit. Jesus says that He is in the Father and also in us, and that we are in Him.

To be born again is to be born of the Spirit. We share in Christ’s death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in us.

There is a close unity within the person of God- Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When we are born again, we are brought into the union.

I am in God and God is in me. This is not some Eastern mystical idea where “god” is in the creation and everything is “god.”

No, this is about relationships. God invites us into a relational unity with Him that we were created for and which sin destroyed.

Because I am now in God, I need to protect this unity through a commitment to holiness. I do not want to risk this unity by offending God’s perfect holiness. This would be like defiling my marriage relationship by sleeping with a woman other than my wife.

We were created for a close relationship with God. Jesus died on the cross to restore the relationship. He gives us the Holy Spirit to be the centre of the relationship.

Prayer

Lord, this concept of being united with you is very hard to get my mind around. I don’t understand it, but I receive it. Please help me to repent and turn away from everything that would rob that relationship. Amen.

Reflection on 1 Peter 3:13-22

726081939dfa0f04d333498d62bea79c

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+3.13-22

Scripture

In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

Observation

Even if we suffer for doing what is right we are blessed. We should always be ready to give an answer for the hope we have in Christ, but with gentleness and respect.

Christ died for our sins once for all to bring us to God. We was put to death but then raised to life by the Holy Spirit. He preached to spirits in prison who disobeyed long ago. Noah’s ark is a type of baptism, the pledge of a good conscience towards God.

Application

Evangelism starts with a heart dedicated and sanctified to the Lord. We must repent of sin and live a life that honours God. This does not mean we have to have it all together before we can share our faith. It does mean that Christ must be the highest priority, the most precious desire of our heart.

Christ must be Lord in our hearts and not just the means to getting to heaven.

We must be always prepared to give the reason for our hope. People ask questions about faith at all kinds of times- often at inconvenient times. Will we take hold of the opportunity as it presents itself, or fob off a seeker because we have other things on our mind?

“Always be prepared” means to understand in our hearts how to share the gospel. It manes that we know who Jesus is and why His death saves us,

This must be done with gentleness and respect. People are not won by arguments and insults. They are won by humility, gentleness and respect. This person asking me about my faith is someone who was created in the image of God and for whom Christ died. Our faith sharing must always be done with this in mind.

Prayer

Lord, who are you leading me to talk to today, this week? Let my life, my attitudes and my words speak highly of you to all that I speak. Amen.
