Panama, Jerusalem and Heaven

conspiracy-theory

The leak of millions of documents from a law firm in the Central American country of Panama has a lot of people worried. The company, Mossack Fonseca, specialises in helping clients set up companies in other countries. There is nothing illegal in that, of course, but it is possible that wealthy individuals have been breaking laws in their own nations by using these companies to avoid tax.

The interesting thing about this is that it shows how difficult it is to keep secrets in our modern technologically driven culture. It is not yet clear whether the leak was an inside job or whether hackers from outside the company illegally obtained the data.

There are people around who sincerely believe that there are people who have hidden, virtually unlimited power and are really the ones who control world events. Maybe we want to believe that in all the chaos and unpredictability of life that somebody somewhere is in control- whether it is the Illuminati, the Rosthschilds, the Queen (seriously).

There are huge problems with such theories, of course. While it may have been credible to believe that some secretive group in Europe or the United States controlled governments and economies when wealth was essentially concentrated in a handful of countries, the rise of China, India and other Asian nations has effectively spread wealth globally and makes such control unlikely.

Of course there is an organisation that spreads across all national borders. Maybe the Pope is the one who pulls the strings. The huge bureaucracy of the Catholic Church, its assets and its high ideals does suggest that it could be disciplined enough to control governments around the world. In fact during the Middle Ages it was the church that controlled princes and kings at least in Europe. Yet, as a world power the church seems particularly ineffective, at least in its signature issues such as abortion and same sex “marriage.”

No, to look at who really controls the world we have to look higher. No human organisation can pull the strings of human events.

God himself manages to walk a fine line between being sovereign and allowing people to have free will. He has a kingdom, but it is not like a worldly kingdom. This king seeks to rule by persuasion and allowing people to reap the consequences of their actions, both good and bad.

History is “His story”- God’s story in the world. From the time of creation, man’s first rejection of God, right through to Christ’s death on the cross clearing the way for reconciliation of people to God, it has all been about God’s love for the world.

Now we see something remarkable happening- an exponential growth all around the world of people who claim to follow Jesus. Some statisticians believe that the number of people becoming christians each day is more than twice the number of people who are born each day. Not only is God’s kingdom growing in numbers it is growing as a percentage of the world’s population.

Conspiracy theories are rooted in fear- fear that there is someone with hidden but unlimited power. But reality is rooted in faith- faith in the living God who loves us and has died for us, and really does have unlimited power.

Reflection on John 21:1-19

Scripture

Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

Observation

Peter and some of the disciples go fishing. Jesus appears on the beach at daybreak. They have caught no fish all night, but Jesus tells them to cast the nets on the other side of the boat. They do so and catch more than they can handle.

John tells Peter, “It is the Lord”, and Peter swims in to the shore while the others stay in the boat. When they are all together Jesus invites them to share breakfast.

After that have eaten, Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him. He replies, “Yes, you know that I love you. Jesus tells him to feed His sheep. This is repeated twice more.

Application

When we sin in a big way, as Peter had done in denying Jesus, there is needed a process of putting things right so that the relationship with God is re-established.

1. Forgiveness- that is always God’s offer to us when we repent and turn back to Him.

2. Fellowship- we need to spend time enjoying the presence of the the Lord

3- Restoration- this is a recommissioning or a confirmation of our calling and vision of our ministry or purpose.

We often make the mistake of believing the God’s forgiveness is enough. God is relational and desired friendship with us not just a religious transaction. Building that friendship is a process that we grow into.

Prayer

Lord I thank you that you love me and desire to spend time with me and invest in my life. Help me to seek you, going beyond repentance and into deep fellowship with you. Amen.

The “Beast” Revealed

Who is the Beast of the Book of Revelation? There are many fanciful and wrong ideas about this, but many Bible scholars are now pointing to the Roman Emperor Nero.

J.D. King writes in the World Revival Network blog:

idolWho The ‘Beast of Revelation’ Really Is

As far back as I can remember people have been speculating about the “Antichrist,” an evil figure referenced in portions of the New Testament.

After President Ronald Wilson Reagan was shot and miraculously recovered in 1981, people made the ridiculous assertion that he was the prophesied evil figure of “end-times.” It didn’t help that his first, middle, and last name all had six letters (666).

At that same time, others argued that the Antichrist was Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev or Muammar Gaddafi of Libya. Less than a decade later Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians were insisting that the “Man of sin” was actually Iraqi Saddam Hussein in the land once known as Babylon.

Later, I learned that previous generations believed that the Antichrist was Benito Mussolini, Prime Minister of Italy or Adolf Hitler of Nazi Germany. The actual listing of individuals identified with this role is quite long and ludicrous. Whatever nation happens to be the current enemy of America (or Israel) usually supplies us with the current candidates for the antichrist.[1]

Obviously there’s a lot of misunderstanding and misapplication here. Many of our collective anxieties and fears are coloring our readings of the Bible. We’re bringing into the text things Scripture never actually articulates. Much of this happens because of our confusion about the Bible and ignorance of the apocalyptic genre. We don’t comprehend its intended meaning or its use of fierce imagery and symbols.

Reflection on Revelation 5:11-14

worship.jpg

Reference: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation+5.11-14

Scripture

To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb

be praise and honour and glory and power

for ever and ever!

Observation

In heaven the voices of many angels sing glory to the Lord- ten thousand times ten thousand of them. They sing, “Worthy is the Lamb to receive honour.”

Then the whole of creation joins in- every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth and on the sea.

Application

This is a massive chorus of praise to God- the millions of angels and then every creature in the whole of creation.

The time is coming when even those who deny the Lord will be forced to honour Him and recognise that He is worthy of praise,

The whole of creation praises the Lord- every bird and animal, the flowers and fish, the stars and comets. There is an awesome symphony of praise to God going on constantly.

At the moment we see this very dimly and join in imperfectly. The effects of sin in our world blind us to the glory of God. But the day is coming when we will see the Lord as He really is, and then our worship will be pure.

So for now we praise in part and worship weakly. But we need to give Him all that we can, for He is worthy of our praise.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the Lamb who was slain. I praise you. I thank you for dying for my sin. I thank you for the privilege of being a part of your kingdom. May my days be filled with your praise. Amen

Reflection on Acts 9:1-20

saul

Scripture

The Lord said, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for me.”

Observation

Saul is breathing murderous threats against the followers of Jesus. He receives authority from the High Priest to go to Damascus and bring back in captivity any disciples there.

Along the road he has an encounter with Jesus and is struck blind. He goes on to Damascus and eats nothing for three days,

A believer named Ananias is told by the Lord to go to Saul and lay hands on him to restore his sight. Ananias does this, and Saul is immediately healed.

Saul then spends several days in Damascus preaching about Jesus in the synagogues.

Application

When a person has an encounter with Christ, everything is changed. No matter how opposed to God they may be, a real meeting with Christ is life-changing.

We need to pray more intensely for our unsaved friends and family members, that they will come to see Jesus face to face.

The church is good at evangelism programmes and revival meetings. But just one touch from the Lord will set a person on the path to salvation far more quickly than a dozen programmes.

Prayer

Lord please help me to pray fervently for my unsaved friends to be touched by Jesus. Amen.

Everybody Knows…

authoritarian-cartoon-man

Last night’s cell group meeting generated an impromptu study on who satan is and when his fall from grace occurred. This was partly sparked by discussion on the early chapters of Genesis which record, amongst other things, the first temptation of Adam and Eve.

I looked up a couple of web-sites that asserted that satan, also known as Lucifer, was originally an archangel and the leader of the heavenly praise. There were no scriptures to back this up, so it seems to be a tradition rather than Bible teaching.

Discussion turned to two traditional passages used in the discussion- Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14. These passages often confuse me because some preachers confidently assert they talk about Lucifer in his pre-fall condition. I struggle with this because they are passages addressed as taunts against two particular human rulers. I can see how you might get an interpretation that the passages are talking about satan but they explicitly state in the text that they are addressed as taunts against the king of Babylon (Isaiah 14) and the King of Tyre (Ezekiel 28)- in fact the Ezekiel passage says this twice.

Then the revelation came. One of the group members read the Isaiah 14 passage and I heard the word I have never read before:

“How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!

Isaiah 14:14

The New Living says this:

How you have fallen from heaven,
morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!

I asked the group member, “Is that the New King James?” to which she said “Yes”

So the New King James follows the original King James in translating the “morning star” as Lucifer, and then helpfully adds the section heading “The Fall of Lucifer” right before it.

That’s where they get it from.

Here’s the problem. Lucifer is a Latin name meaning “light bearer” and was used to refer to the morning star, Venus. But the Old Testament was written in Hebrew, not Latin. So when the translators of the King James Version were doing their translation work in the early 1600’s they were still influenced by the so-called Latin Vulgate Bible which was the official Catholic translation.

The translators of the NKJV have no such excuse. They should have translated is as “morning star” and maybe referred to the Lucifer translation in a footnote.

You can still choose to interpret these passages as referring to satan if you like. To me it’s a bit of a stretch to do that, especially when the original writers were clear about whom they were directing their comments at.

The NLT Study Bible, in the footnotes to Isaiah 14:12 say this:

Some see the fall of the king of Babylon here as symbolising the fall of Satan. However there is little here to suggest that Isaiah understood it in this way. He was thinking of the historical king of Babylon… the Hebrew text makes no apparent reference here to the name of Satan.

All of this shows that we should not blindly accept what people teach us about the Bible. If something doesn’t seem to make sense in the way people interpret Scripture, you should always ask for more information about why they believe that.

In an ideal world, every christian would know Hebrew and Greek. Failing that, I think it’s always a good idea to check several versions of Scripture to try and gain a better understanding of a text. Software makes this so easy to do, or use Bible apps or internet search sites such as Bible Gateway.

Reflection on John 20:19-21

slide-3-e28093-disciples-and-jesus.jpg

Reference: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+20.19-31

Scripture

These things are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in His name.

Observation

The disciples meet in a locked room, and Jesus appears. He shows them His wounds to demonstrate who He is. He breathes on them and gives them the Holy Spirit.

Thomas missed out on this event and so he refuses to believe that Jesus is alive. A week later the disciples again meet together, and again Jesus appears. Now Thomas is able to believe.

Jesus did much more than is recorded in John’s gospel. But these things are written in order to bring the reader to faith in Jesus.

Application

It must have been an exciting, even fearful, experience to meet with the risen Lord in this way.

Since Jesus ascended to heaven, we have the opportunity to meet the risen Lord every day. This may not be in the physical way of the disciples’ experience, but it is just as real.

The initiative now lies with us. It is up to me to start the conversation, to seek the Lord. When I do that He meets with me, hears my prayers, talks back and shows me His ways.

He truly is Emmanuel- God with us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I thank you that you are always with me, that your Spirit dwells in me. Help me to fellowship with you in every place I go, in every activity and conversation. Amen.

Reflection on Revelation 1:1-8

revelation.jpg

Reference: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=revelation+1.1-8

Scripture

To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom of priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Observation

This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, given by God to John. There is a blessing for everyone who reads the words of the prophecy aloud and for those who hear it.

John writes to the seven churches in Asia. Jesus is coming with the clouds and everyone will see Him.

Application

The book of Revelation starts with this big doxology of praise and worship to God. John has seen something huge and is caught up in praise.

We need to train our hearts and minds to recognise who God is, what Christ has done and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. When we think and mediate on these things, we too will be moved to praise Him.

Jesus is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him. As followers of Jesus we can see Him before that day and worship Him in the present time.

Prayer

So soon after the celebration of your death and resurrection, Lord Jesus, our hearts are filled with awe and praise. May that continue through every day. Amen.
