Is Easter Pagan?

at-his-resurrection.jpg

Every year, about this time, there is a bit of a controversy about Easter having pagan origins and therefore christians should not celebrate it.

It seems to me that it’s a bit arrogant of people to assume that after 2000 years of christian tradition they alone have the truth about Easter and everyone else has been deceived. It is possible, but you really have to do your research before making such an assumption.

As far as christians are concerned, Easter is the grand celebration of the central historical fact of our faith- Jesus died on the cross and then on the third day He came back to life, raised by the power of God the Father.

The resurrection, as far as historians can tell happened on a Sunday, and from very early days, the church had its worship celebrations on Sunday (or the Lord’s Day as they called it), even the Jewish christians who were used to worshipping on the Sabbath. Every week was a celebration of the mystery of the resurrection.

Let’s get the easy stuff out of the way first- Easter eggs and Easter bunnies have nothing to do with the resurrection. Christians do not worship eggs, chickens or rabbits. These things were often used as symbols of spring which in cold climates is about new birth after the death of nature in winter. Christians have often said “Aha! Great teaching aids to help us understand how Jesus’ resurrection brings new life to His followers.” The church in its worship has never elevated these symbols to be important.

The one important Easter symbol for christians is an empty tomb. Christ died, Christ was buried, Christ rose.

Some people say christians should not celebrate Easter because the name itself is derived from an ancient pagan goddess. That’s true, but only in English and German. In most European languages the word used is a variant on the Latin word pascha which refers to the Jewish festival of Passover.

The word Eostre is a Middle English word for the month roughly corresponding to April. Yes it is named after a pagan goddess, but most people back then thought about the month not the deity it was named after. According to the logic of Easter-haters, we should not be able to worship at all in January (named after the Roman god Janus) or March (named after the god Mars) or on any day of the week- all of which in English are named after Roman and Norse gods.

What about the dates which are based on phases of the moon and the equinox? Doesn’t that seem a bit like pagan worship?

Well Genesis tells us that God gave us the sun and the moon to mark the seasons. Jesus was crucified at the time of Passover, the date of which was set by the Habrew lunar calendar. The early church Fathers thought that Easter should be near Passover but not necessarily on the same day. In other words Easter is linked to the Passover festival but is not the same thing. So it was decided at the Council of Nicea  in 325 that Easter would be celebrated by all the churches on the first Sunday after the full moon following the spring equinox (normally March 21st).

Just because Easter is linked to a phase of the moon and to the equinox, like some pagan feasts are, does not make it in itself a pagan feast.

So this year celebrate Good Friday and Easter as good christian festivals. The most important event in the history of humanity was the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He purchased redemption for our souls and offers eternal life for evryone who will follow Him.

Scripture

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call in God in Christ Jesus.

Observation

Paul tells us to beware of the mutilators of the flesh, those who trust in circumcision rather than in Christ. Paul is the peak of Jewishness and if anyone had reason to trust in the flesh it was him.

Now whatever gains he had he counts them all but loss. Everything is rubbish compared with the surpassing value of knowing Christ. His one goal now is to know Christ and the power of His resurrection. He has not yet achieved this but he presses on towards the goal for the prize of knowing Christ.

Application

For Paul there was only one thing in life worth pursuing- a closer relationship with Christ.

Many people are seduced into believing that we can share worldly goals as well as godly goals. As Christians our focus must always be on Christ and Him alone.

Our work must be to glorify God. Our home life and social life must equally be avenues for pursuing Christ.

This means that we are not free to do what pleases us. In everything Christ calls the shots. It is not good enough to plan our own destiny and ask for God to bless it.

A football player who presses towards the goal is not free to pursue his own game. He is part of a team under the direction of a captain and a coach. In the same way, our lives must be subject in every way to he direction of the Holy Spirit, Otherwise we will miss our goal- fellowship with God.

Prayer

Lord help me to press towards the goal of communion with you. May I not be distracted by the things of this world, but rather let me be always focussed on you. Amen.

I am the Lord your rescuer

Who makes a path through the sea

Who defeats your enemy

And saves your soul

–

Don’t dwell on the past.

Remember where you came from

My mighty deeds

And acts of grace

Remember but don’t live there

–

I am doing a New Thing

Yes for this day, this hour

I am still your rescuer

I still do bold new things

Bringing life where there is none

Blessing you with water for life.

“How To Keep Falling In Love”- Ann Voskamp

Ann Voskamp reminds us that we need to stay in love with Jesus:

Stay in love.

I tell the girl that in a hardly voice, the kind of voice that comes from a primal place.

Though, truth be told, she tells me she doesn’t know if she had ever found that love place in the first place — which, yeah, makes it relatively hard to stay in love.

Falling in love, staying in love? That’s what seduces across the radio waves. That’s what the lingerie catalogues woo us with, what the billboards tease us with, what the MTV videos hard sell.

When the world’s selling goods dressed up as love while the church is selling law dressed up as good news —–  guess where the next generation starts lining up?

Reflection on Luke 15:11-32

Scripture

“But we had to celebrate and rejoice because this brother of your was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.”

Observation

The parable of the Prodigal Son is so familiar to us that even people who don’t know the Bible at all well know the story.

The younger of two sons goes away with his share of the father’s property. He spends it all on indulgent living and eventually returns home thinking to hire himself as a servant.

The father runs to meet him, overwhelmed with joy at his return. He orders a feast to be prepared to celebrate.

The older brother is angry at this celebration. He is slighted by the fact that he has, in his opinion, slaved away and never been rewarded.

Application

God’s love is immense, unmeasurable and unfathomable. Anyone who wants to can come to Him, be forgiven and welcomed back to the family. No sin is so big that it cannot be forgiven when we repent.

If God’s love is so big and unlimited, we, his children, need to be people of big hearts. Too often christians can be like the older brother- too focussed on working for God to be able to rejoice at the salvation of a sinner. We need to remember always that we are sinners saved by grace.

Prayer

Lord help me to be as gracious to prodigals as you are. Amen.

Scripture

In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.

Observation

Anyone in Christ is a new creation- the old has passed away and the new has come. This is God’s gift to us and part of His plan to reconcile the world to Himself.

God has reconciled us to Him, and He now gives us the ministry of reconciliation.

God makes us His ambassadors, carrying this message to a world that does not know Him.

Application

When we came into a relationship with Christ, we became a new creation. Our old life passed away and we became new in every way because the Holy Spirit came into us with a new perspective and understanding about what our life is meant to be about.

We changed from people motivated by worldly concerns to people who desire to please God.

Having been reconciled to God, given a new start and new direction, we become messengers of God’s reconciling work- ambassadors for Christ,

Prayer

Help me Father to live out your reconciling work in every part of my life. Amen.

Reflection on Joshua 5:1-12

Scripture

“Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt.”

Observation

The children of Israel have crossed the Jordan and entered the Promised Land. The neighbouring kings have heard how the Lord has helped His people, and they are afraid.

The Lord commands Joshua to circumcise all those who were born in the wilderness. They remain camped at Gilgal until everyone is healed.

The Lord says to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt.”

The Israelites celebrate the Passover in Gilgal, and from that day the manna ceases.

Application

Circumcision was a physical sign of the covenant for the Jews. They had not circumcised their babies in the wilderness, so in one of their first acts in the Promised Land, they remedy the situation.

The Lord’s commentary on this is that it rolls away the disgrace of Egypt from them.

We carry all kinds of emotional scars and feelings of shame and worthlessness. He Lord wants to roll away from us the disgrace of the world.

When we come to Christ we are a new creation. The old has gone and the new has come. For many people, it takes time to let the new creation to seep through their hearts and out into their lives.

We need to embrace all that God is doing in our lives so that He can roll away our disgrace.

Prayer

Lord I confess my hurt to you and I ask you to roll away all disgrace, shame and guilt in the name of Jesus. Amen.

What Is Wrong With This Picture?

All you need to know about the terminal decline of Western culture is in this news item.

When a society so glorifies sexual licentiousness, the end is not far off.

Only a full-on move of God’s Spirit bringing people back to Him can save us from ourselves.

From the ABC:

Giant pink condom put onto Sydney’s Hyde Park obelisk to remind residents to have safe sex

Giant pink condom goes onto obelisk

In a move to promote safe sex, a New South Wales health promotion organisation has put a giant pink condom onto the obelisk at Sydney’s Hyde Park.

The 18-metre tall condom was put onto the heritage-listed structure on Friday night in the lead up to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, to be held next month, by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) health promotion organisation ACON.

The organisation’s chief executive Nicolas Parkhill said the Mardi Gras was a good time to remind people that using condoms was one of the most effective ways to stop transmission of HIV.

“Every year around 80 per cent of HIV transmissions in NSW are among men who have sex with men, so it’s vital that we use opportunities like Mardi Gras to remind gay men about the health benefits of using condoms,” Mr Parkhill said.

“While new drugs are starting to provide other means of protection against HIV, condoms remain central to the fight against the virus because they remain one of the most cheap and effective ways of preventing the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections.”

He said the giant condom was first put up for World AIDS Day in 2014.

“It was a huge hit … so we thought we’d roll it out again for this year’s Mardi Gras to act as a highly visible safe sex reminder, not just for locals but also for the thousands of international visitors who come to Sydney for Mardi Gras.”

ACON also held a launch for its Stay Safe campaign at Bondi Beach today, as part of efforts to put an end to HIV transmissions in NSW by 2020.

The organisation gave away 1,000 pink inflatable rings, which they called “lifesavers” and described as “condom-like” to the public at the beach.

Established in 1985 as the AIDS Council of NSW, ACON works to end HIV transmission among gay and homosexually active men, and promote the lifelong health of LGBTI people and people with HIV.

It is funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Ministry of Health.

The obelisk was built in 1857 to vent Sydney’s first sewerage system and now provides ventilation for the city’s stormwater system.
