Reflection on 2 Peter 1:16-21

Transfigurationbloch

Scripture

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Observation

Peter did not preach about human myths and theories because he was an eyewitness to Christ’s glory. He saw God’s glory come down on Christ and announce, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

So Peter’s experience confirms the prophetic words of the Old Testament. No prophecy of Scripture can be a matter of our own interpretation because it comes to us through the Holy Spirit.

Application

The difference between the Bible and every other religious book is that it is not human theory, but an historical record of God’s dealings with people. Even the claims of Jesus to be the Messiah go back to historical prophecies confirmed by contemporary eyewitnesses.

The great claims of the faith rely on a chain of eyewitness accounts coming down over 2000 years. My testimony is a vital part of that chain, just as the apostle Peter’s was.

The story of God is shown today in lives being changed one day at a time by the gentle unstoppable pressure of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer

Thank you Jesus for saving me and revealing your glory to me. Now reveal your glory through me that others can see your saving power. Amen.

Reflection on Psalm 99

psalms

The Lord reigns!

Everyone rejoice!

He sits in the glory cloud

Fire and smoke hide Him

The Lord is mighty

He rules over the earth

Come on, let’s worship Him

Come let’s praise His name

Teach me Lord

To seek your presence

Let your glory fall

Here as on Mt Sinai

Reflection on Exodus 24:9-18

Scripture
Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.

Observation
Moses and Aaron and the elders of Israel approach the mountain, and they see God. The Lord tells Moses to come to the top of the mountain, so he takes Joshua and they ascend.
As Moses goes toward the summit, the glory of God covers it. The Lord calls to Moses from the glory cloud which appears to be like devouring fire.

Application
Words cannot describe the glory of God- it’s a cloud, smoke, devouring fire.
The presence of the Lord defies our minds to describe. To the believer it is a cause for wonder. To the unbeliever it is a cause for fear.
The presence of God was what drove Moses on. His heart’s desire was to know the Lord ever more intimately.
That same desire should drive us also. Prayer, Bible study, and other disciplines are dry and deadly unless we are pursiong the presence of the Lord. But when we truly meet with the Lord- what glory we find and what joy.

Prayer
Lord make me like Moses who desired above all the be in your presence. Give me that same passion. Amen.

Flat earthers or real scientists?

Jo Nova writes:

Almost everything the media tells you about sceptics is wrong: they’re engineers and hard scientists. They like physics too.

In the mainstream media, skeptics are called Flat-Earthers, Deniers, and ideologues who deny basic physics. So it’s no surprise that they are exactly the opposite. A recent survey of 5,286 readers of leading skeptical blogs shows that the people driving the skeptical debate are predominantly engineers and hard scientists with backgrounds like maths, physics and chemistry. Which group in the population are least likely to deny basic physics?  Skeptics.

I asked Mike Haseler for more details:

  • around half of respondents had worked in engineering and a quarter in science
  • around 80% had degrees of which about 40% were “post graduate” qualified.
  • Respondents were asked which areas they had formal “post-school qualification”. A third said “physics/chemistry. One third said maths. Just under 40% said engineering. 40% said they had post school training in computer programming.

Furthermore, the media “debate” is nothing like the real debate. Four out of five skeptics agree our emissions cause CO2 levels to rise, that Co2 causes warming, and that global temperatures have increased. In other words, the mainstream media journalists have somehow entirely missed both the nature of the skeptics and the nature of the debate.

The so called “experts” (say like Stephan Lewandowsky, and John Cook) either don’t understand what drives skeptics, or they know but do their best “not to accidentally discover it” with irrelevant surveys, loaded questions, poor sampling and bad methodology. (I’m going with incompetence). Lewandowsky, after all, tried to figure out the motivation of skeptics by asking people who hate them if they believe Diana was murdered. Not surprisingly he didn’t find out that about half of skeptics are Engineers, but he did find 10 anonymous people on the Internet who said the moon landing was faked. This is the kind of result only government funded science could achieve.

The big question this survey doesn’t answer is why no government funded groups seem to have done this obvious research long ago. The climate is supposedly a high priority, so understanding skeptics would seem “sort of” useful. Then again, it’s only useful if you wanted to figure out whether there was a consensus, or if you wanted to reach one. I guess that’s not the aim…

Mike Haseler has done a great job here on a much needed task. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the results in future.

Full credit to all the other skeptics who didn’t need the hard science training to see the flaws. They sagely picked the correct side of the scientific debate. Congrats to those lawyers, farmers, doctors, taxi-drivers, and pool shop owners (I spoke to one yesterday) plus kids, and countless other sane brains who are not easily fooled.

Science, of course, is a philosophy, not a certificate.

Yonggi Cho convicted of embezzlement

This is very sad news indeed. It is so easy to lose focus in ministry. The Devil is always there twisting, lying and misleading ministers.

Founder of World’s Largest Megachurch Convicted of Embezzling $12 Million

South Korean pastor David Yonggi Cho bought stock from son, evaded taxes.

The founding pastor of the world’s largest Pentecostal congregation has been sentenced to three years in prison for embezzling 13 billion won (US$12 million) in church funds.

David Yonggi Cho, 78, founded Yoido Full Gospel Church, an Assemblies of God-affiliated denomination that has grown to more than 1 million members. Last year, CT noted how the pastor emeritus faced indictment for an alleged stock scheme with his son.

Last Thursday, the Seoul pastor was convicted of embezzlement as part of a scheme in which he arranged for the church to buy stock from his son Cho Hee-jun at more than three times the market price.

Hee-jun was sentenced to three years in prison for colluding with his father. Hee-jun, 49, previously served as chairman of the Yeongsan Christian Cultural Center.

Church administrators warned David Cho against purchasing the stock at an inflated price, but the pastor said he had to help his son out of a tight spot, according to Cho Hee-jun’s arraignment document. Cho was also convicted of evading 3.5 billion won (US$3.2 million) in taxes, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Church elders have also accused the pastor of embezzling additional funds.

The Seoul Central District Court, which handed down its sentence Thursday, ordered Cho to pay a 5 billion won (US$4.7 million) fine. Cho’s prison sentence was suspended five years; Hee-jun was jailed immediately.

Cho first came under investigation in 2011, when church elders accused him of embezzling $20 million. Cho also has been criticized for privatizing church assets. CT previously reported on the investigation of Cho, and noted in 2006 that Yoido Full Gospel had selected Lee Young-hoon to replace Cho as head pastor.

Stripy bugs

One of the unusual features of this hot dry summer has been an abundance of one particular type of bug. The stripy bug is quite pretty to look at, but when they decide to feast on human flesh that pack quite a bite.

They are everywhere- on stressed or dying plants, on the ground, even on cars. Here are a couple I caught on the bonnet of the car this afternoon. The spots are dirt on the car, not specks on the lens

For these photos, I used the Super-macro feature on my camera. I wondered just how sharp these pictures of the bugs were, so I zoomed in and saw this. I was quite impressed!

Today’s Photos

It has been a very long hot and dry summer in Narrabri with temperatures way up and rainfall way down. Most days, the humidity has been below 20% and often night temperatures have not gone below 20C.

Farmers in the district have lost crops and some are now shooting stock because they can no longer afford to feed them.

Like many people in town, I have found it hard to keep enough water up to plants. Many of our potted flowers have died in the extreme heat. And our very hardy lillipillies have curled up their toes.

Other plants are stressed but hanging on like this Japanese honeysuckle

But then we have all these signs of hope for a better season ahead

“Gum nuts” on a cadgia tree suggest optimism for new babies!

Next door’s bougainvilleas seem to thrive as always.

I planted sunflowers last spring. They looked spectacular at their peak, and now look rather dead. But thousands of seeds will plant in the dirt and we may get multiplication next spring.

Today’s Sermon

Earlier I reported that there was no sermon for today, due to a software problem.

When I turned on the computer for tonight’s service, Audacity started with a message, “Hey I’ve recovered that sermon you thought you lost.”

So we now have the prodigal sermon on our web-site. Click here to listen

The “Culture War” is Real

Our society is now so far removed from its christian roots that basic Biblical teaching is deemed offensive. I wouldn’t have given “Revolve” to primary school children, but there s far more explicit stuff in “Dolly” and “Girlfriend”.

Victoria is further down the  slippery slope than New South Wales but we can’t be far behind. When Bibles in a traditional format where distributed to Year 6 students in Narrabri a few years ago, some parents were outraged.

From the ABC:

Access Ministries under scrutiny after ‘inappropriate and offensive’ material given out at Victorian primary school

Victoria’s Education Department has launched an investigation into what it calls inappropriate and offensive religious material distributed at a primary school.

The ABC understands religious educators handed out material at Torquay College last year that instructed children to seek counselling if they had homosexual feelings.

The material also claims that girls who wear revealing clothes are inviting sexual assault and that masturbation and sex before marriage are sinful.

The so-called Biblezines were given as graduation gifts as part of a program run by the state’s Christian education provider Access Ministries.

Naja Voorhoeve, whose seven-year-old child received the material from an older student, says special religious instruction (SRI) providers should be banned from public schools.

“If the SRI providers were prepared to breach our trust in this matter, you have absolutely no idea about the other things that they’re doing, about instances in other schools where this material might have been handed out,” she said.

“My personal position is that SRI volunteers should not be allowed in schools because their programs cannot be adequately monitored.

“What they do is not part of the curriculum… so they’re basically let in on their own.”

The department says it has launched an investigation into the material and the actions taken by the provider.

“The materials are totally inappropriate and offensive and have no place in our schools,” it said in a statement.

“The department has scope to review the accreditation status of providers once are investigations are complete.”

Access Ministries has been contacted for comment.
