Carl Trueman: Why Pro-Abortion Activists Desecrate Churches

From First Things

Since the news broke that the Supreme Court may be poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, some pro-abortion activists have responded by vandalizing Catholic churches and disturbing Masses. While the threats to disrupt worship en masse and even burn the sacramental elements seem to be overblown so far, the backlash against religion is surely a sign of the times. Most obviously, the sartorial choices of some of the activists (dresses inspired by a sermonizing Margaret Atwood novel) speak to the infantilism of our age. Clearly, there is no issue so profound—not even the mystery of the creation of new life—that cannot be reduced to sophomoric silliness. But if the idiom has been that of puerile performance, the focus on churches indicates that desecration is becoming a default strategy for the political class in the modern West. And that bodes ill for some of our most basic freedoms.

In striking at the Catholic Church at worship, the protesters have identified an obvious player in the history of anti-abortion activism. The Catholic Church, and many Catholics, from high-profile figures such as Robert George to countless unknown laypeople who help at crisis pregnancy centers or engage in fundraising work, have been the beating heart of the pro-life movement for decades. And the Catholic judges on the Supreme Court are the key ingredient in the impending decision. But there is surely more to the targeting of churches than the mere fact of Catholic involvement in current events. The protesters target churches because they want to profane the sacred.

Abortion is desecration. That is why it raises such passionate emotions on both sides of the debate. Sex and conception create new life and that means they possess—or should possess—a mysterious aura of the sacred. Attitudes about them therefore go to the heart of what, if anything, society thinks it means to be human. But the case for abortion teaches that new life is simply a biological process that adds a new part to a woman’s body, and that this can be removed when convenient. Terminating a pregnancy is therefore of no more significance than clipping a damaged fingernail or cauterizing an unsightly wart.

Our society intuitively knows that this is nonsense. That is why the law considers an assault leading to the loss of a fingernail or a wart to be far less heinous than one that ends in rape or miscarriage. In such extreme circumstances, the law acknowledges by escalated penalties that sex and procreation cannot be reduced to merely one more biological function or recreation. These things involve the mystery of life itself and place us on the threshold of the sacred. But a culture of abortion desecrates this mystery, at least as far as such desecration serves the purposes of perceived human autonomy and control.

That is one reason why pro-abortion activists have targeted church services. The church service is not simply a convenient place to intimidate pro-life campaigners. To attack a worship service is not simply to annoy the participants. It is to profane the sacred. It is to enact that which abortion itself represents. It is to spit on the very identity of those worshipping and thus upon the God whom they worship. It is to strike at the very heart of what Christians believe it means to be human, a dependent creature in the presence of a holy God. It is to strip away the aura that shrouds the mystery of life. It is to attempt to make ridiculous that which reminds us we are creatures defined first and foremost by obligations to others—to God and to those dependent upon us, such as the unborn child in the womb. It is an act of intentional amnesia. More than that, it is an act of descration.

Only One Worldview Brings Life

Any time any person (usually a christian) says “Changing this will lead to that,” they are scorned for espousing the slippery slope theory. Sadly, human nature being what it is, the slopes are often slipped.

We see this already in Australia. Just one year after the Same Sex Marriage plebiscite, which we were told would not affect anybody, we find that attacks are being made on the rights of religious schools to teach their beliefs about human sexuality. They said, “If you don’t like same sex marriage you don’t have to have one,” but already the pressure is building for schools and, soon, churches to buckle under and negate their own faith.

People around the world have been shocked by the decision in New York State to allow abortions right up until birth. A baby now has not even the right to live right until it is safely born. The city was lit up in pink in an obscene celebration of this event.

But it gets worse. In the state of Virginia similar legislation is being introduced. The Governor of that state has been reported to have coldly described a scenario in which labour starts before an abortion is completed. The baby is born naturally and then made comfortable while the doctor and the mother decide whether to kill the baby or allow her to live. In normal societies this is called infanticide and fills people with revulsion.

Whenever people decide to live their lives separate from God, it always results in a death culture. Whether it is the traditional pagan human sacrifice or its modern versions of abortion and euthanasia, humans will be sacrificed.

Fifty years ago this would have prompted outrage but now we are not surprised as the slopes continue to be slipped.

A number of times in the scriptures people are given choices and exhorted to “choose life.” Have you ever wondered why they had to be told to “Choose life”? Isn’t that a normal desire?

No. Sin, our built in rebellion against God always drives us towards death. A culture that ignores God will always, in the end, choose death- even the deaths of newborn babies.

Abortion in Australia

I’m seeing lots of Australians post about the abortion laws in New York where abortion is a “right” right up until birth.

Meanwhile in Victoria and Queensland abortion is a right until 20-22 weeks and right up until birth if two doctors agree it is in the mother’s interest.

In NSW, abortion is only lawful if a doctor believes that the mental or physical health is at risk from continuing the pregnancy. A bit of a huge loophole there.

“Choice” is a great idea, if you ignore the choice of the baby.

I often see human rights advocates express concern for the “most vulnerable” people in our society, but they never mention pre-birth babies who are literally the most vulnerable people in our society.

This is a great evil, a terrible blight in our society, which must be overcome.

Snakes Return To Ireland

OPINION

Is it mere coincidence that a serpent came ashore in snake-free but no longer abortion-free Ireland?

IRELAND, January 14, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — It turned up unexpectedly.

The newspaper reports were lighthearted.

It was strange but nothing more, surely?

On January 4, washed up on the shore of County Cork, Ireland, was a large serpent, measuring 1.5 meters (approximately 5 feet).

Ireland is free of snakes. It has been since the time of St. Patrick, who, it is said, cast them from the island. They have for centuries represented the vile paganism that ruled the land before Patrick came and established Christianity.

The fact that a snake made its way ashore onto Irish soil once more is not, therefore, to be seen as just another zoological phenomenon. It may be read as also a symbolic one, coming at a time when Ireland is turning away from the light and naively embracing an ancient darkness.

Just three days before the appearance of the serpent, the new Irish law on abortion came into effect. The president of Ireland had just a few weeks earlier rescinded the country’s constitutional safeguard for the unborn and signed into law the death warrant of many future Irish now denied the right to be born. On that day, his pen was more akin to the scalpel, the same implement that shall now be wielded against defenseless human beings who have committed no wrong, who asked for nothing other than life and love, but found only death.

January 1 was the day chosen to inaugurate this new gruesome dispensation. Traditionally, this is the feast day dedicated to the Mother of God. It is, now, in Ireland a “feast day” of a different kind for another type of “celebration.” What is being venerated is unseen but, nevertheless, all too present in modern Irish society.

A day or so after the feast of the Epiphany, when Christians commemorate how the kings came from across the world to worship the infant King of Kings, the first abortion took place in Ireland. It is alleged that this occurred in a hospital that goes under the name Our Lady of Lourdes. This is a title of Our Lady’s specifically linked to her maternal care and concern for the sick. Now, instead, this title has been made into an infernal sneer, a wicked boast.

Was all of this mere coincidence? I’ll leave you to judge that.

But with the darkness now descending upon Ireland’s Four Green Fields, a spiritual night is fast approaching. And, in its cold gloom, strange new gods are being worshipped once more, the bitter lessons of old, that the pagan gods were never gods but demons, long since forgotten.

So too has been forgotten the truth that the Church has been a home to the Irish nation — at times its only home, despite those within the flock who turned out be wolves in sheep clothing. Through persecution and famine, through pain and suffering, exile and poverty, Holy Mother Church was the home where the Irish found refuge emotionally and spiritually, whether in the north country of Ulster, on the grey streets of New York, or the sparsely populated territories of Australia or Patagonia, She was a light to enlighten the darkness that had so often flooded the lives of the children of Erin at home and abroad. For many, the Church remained the hearth warming the center of the nation’s emotional home, and with a Mother always present there.

Today, publicly at least, Ireland has abandoned the faith.

Too many of the country’s politicians talk glibly of the nation’s onward march to a bright new future – one that, no doubt, shall be as economically prosperous as it will be spiritually bankrupt. Yet all the time, while these same politicians incant the word “progress” to justify a nation’s regress to former barbaric ways, the progression talked of is in reality the same as that described in the nine-circles-descent described by Dante.

These Irish who jubilate over new abortion legislation refuse to learn the lessons of old. They shall learn them soon enough, however, especially as they come to experience what spirits have been invoked upon the land of Patrick. By then it will be too late. Even if, at that point, they have learned again that, away from the faith, outside the true home of all mankind, there is only endless night.

A serpent was washed ashore at County Cork on January 4 to usher in 2019. That creature was soon dead. Other “serpents” are already ashore, however, and very much alive, and have all too easily found a home.

Massive Pro-life Petition Stuns NSW Parliament.

Massive pro-life petition stuns parliament in New South Wales

Abortion , Abortion Law Reform , Australia , New South Wales , Parliament , Petition

SYDNEY, Australia, May 10, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — The Legislative Council (upper house) of the New South Wales parliament was brought to a shocked silence as one of the largest official parliamentary petitions in its history was tabled by the Hon. Greg Donnelly MLC.

The petition with 56,559 signatures opposed the Abortion Law Reform (Miscellaneous Acts Amendment) Bill 2016. The Bill aims to “repeal offenses relating to abortion, to specify a ground of unsatisfactory professional conduct by a medical practitioner with respect to abortion, and to establish exclusion zones in order to prohibit certain behavior near premises at which abortions are provided.”

Having announced the number of signatories as part of the tabling process, Donnelly rose to read the content of the petition to the parliament. MPs looked away from their phones to pay attention and immediately noticed two of Donnelly’s staff bringing in large document boxes containing the petition sheets. An audible gasp filled the chamber.

Pro-lifers in the parliamentary gallery to witness the petition being tabled described it as “truly a ‘William Wilberforce’ moment” as the whole room was silent while Donnelly read out the petition.

The petition was the culmination of a two-week effort by the pro-life community. It contained signatures of residents from Sydney and throughout regional areas in New South Wales.

“It was much bigger than expected. I never thought we would get that many. We were really hoping to get 10,000” said petition coordinator Rebecca Gosper from Youth For Life.

The author of the Bill, Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi‏, was not present when the pro-life petition was tabled. She has her own official petition in favor of the Bill, running since November 2015, which is yet to be presented to the parliament. An unofficial online petition sits at 2,028 signatures.

Gosper, a university student who studies Human Sciences, combined with a few friends and created a page on Facebook for the pro-life campaign. What she expected to involve a dozen churches quickly took on an organic life of its own and evolved into 160 churches, sporting, and general community groups getting involved.

The campaign was not limited to the churches, as pro-abortion activists like to claim. “People were really receptive in that regard and were keen to do something practical to make a difference in New South Wales” Gosper said. Even shop owners in country towns became involved.

A mere 48 hours before the first church visits were scheduled, Gosper found herself flooded with messages from volunteers offering to collect signatures from various groups. She ended up working 18 straight hours just to stay on top of the messages and coordinate the flood of volunteers.

After the first weekend, she estimated that there would be a healthy 15,000 to 20,000 signatures. As they were counting, the petition forms kept arriving and the estimate was revised to between 30,000 and 40,000. Then, on Monday with just 48 hours to go, she received a text message from a volunteer that they had 49,000 signatures. Also, there were more that needed to be counted in addition to the petition forms waiting at Parliament House that arrived at network drop-off points.

Gosper says the two-week time frame was motivating for people and the short length didn’t turn out to be an issue. “It was amazing to see how well people responded when they were given the chance,” she said.

Faruqi‏’s Bill looks like it will have an uphill battle to pass the upper house before moving through to the lower house of parliament. LifeSiteNews has learned that even pro-abortion MPs are planning to vote against the Bill due to its extreme nature, similar to what was attempted with the Pyne bills in Queensland. It is also understood that Liberal party leaders are planning to vote against the bill to prevent it from making it to the lower house and becoming an issue in the lead-up to the next election.

Faruqi‏’s office was contacted for comment but did not provide a response. The bill is scheduled to be debated Thursday.

In Iceland 100% of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted.

As the West increasingly plunges towards the abyss of the culture of death, Iceland leads the way in killing inconvenient babies.

From lifesitenews.com

In Iceland 100% of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. Think about that.

March 14, 2017 (PregnancyHelpNews) — In recent remarks to the Citizens Assembly in Ireland, Dr. Peter McParland, an ob-gyn at National Maternity Hospital, pointed to a sign of things to come.

“In Iceland,” the doctor said, “every single baby—100 percent of all those diagnosed with Down syndrome—are aborted.”

The horrors of the statement above can scarcely be grasped. Iceland has become the first nation to boast of eradicating Down syndrome from its country.

Dr. McParland expounded on this systematic annihilation stating, “There hasn’t been a baby with Down syndrome born in Iceland in the past five years.”

Iceland is not alone in its aspirations to create a “Down syndrome-free” world. The holocaust of Down syndrome babies is a global epidemic, taking the lives of human beings created in the image of God on the basis of a prenatal diagnosis indicating Down syndrome.

Denmark follows closely behind Iceland and predicts it will be a “Down-syndrome free” nation in the next 10 years.

Meanwhile, 90 percent of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome in the womb are aborted in Great Britain and the United States.

Among the many reasons these statistics are so tragic is that some babies diagnosed in utero with Down syndrome are born without the condition, while in other cases, doctors who fail to recognize markers for Down syndrome through prenatal testing are open to shockingly titled “wrongful birth” lawsuits.

Even assuming all diagnoses are correct, exactly who are we eradicating from our planet?

NBC News points to studies showing the following:

  • 99% of people with Down syndrome are happy with their lives.
  • 97% of people with Down syndrome like who they are.
  • 96% of people with Down syndrome like how they look.

Statically the vast majority of people with Down syndrome are happy, satisfied, and affectionate members of society—something that couldn’t be said of people born without the disability.

Lifesitenews: Lego Baby Figurine

Its a LEGO ultrasound – an unborn baby in LEGO!

LEGO announces new baby minifigure with awesome ultrasound image

June 3, 2016 (SPUC) — LEGO is tapping into the joy many parents experience when they see their unborn child for the first time on an ultrasound screen.

In an announcement for a new baby minifigure this week, the toy company created a life-affirming graphic depicting a LEGO “baby in the womb.” The company made the graphic look like a birth announcement coupled with a ‘photo’ of the toy baby on an ultrasound screen. The hazy gray ultrasound ‘photo’ shows the smiling ‘baby’, its size and estimated birth date.

“It’s a big day! The first ever LEGO baby minifigure says HEY! to the world, arriving with the LEGO City 60134 Fun in the Park set, tomorrow June 1st !” the announcement reads.

“Simply the best”

The ad was well-received on social media, with many pro-lifers thanking the company for the life-affirming announcement. Actress and pro-life advocate Patricia Heaton tweeted about it, too:

The power of ultrasound images

The ad taps into the strong feelings that ultrasound images of real unborn babies often create. Ultrasounds have become powerful tools in the abortion debate because they show what until recently was hidden from the public eye – a baby in the womb. Ultrasound images show that unborn babies are valuable human beings who act in much the same way that born babies do. Thanks to the new technology, parents have watched their unborn babies smiling, sucking their thumbs, grimacing, clapping, turning somersaults and much more. Texas Right to Life’s Melissa Conway described the ad as “simply adorable” in an interview with the Independent Journal Review.

“LEGO’s introduction of the LEGO baby acknowledges that life, including preborn life, is literally and figuratively a growing industry,” Conway said. “This campaign and expansion to the toy line is a fun way to acknowledge that life begins in Mom’s tummy and affirms that children can easily and undeniably grasp the importance of life, growth, and family.”

Doritos and “humanising foetuses”

However, abortion activists have gone to extremes to suppress information about unborn babies from the general public. Last winter, they even went so far as to openly criticize a Doritos commercial that showed an unborn baby on an ultrasound screen. Sean Davis, co-founder of The Federalist, saw the new LEGO ad and remembered what happened with Doritos:

Abortion activists try to avoid anything that “humanises foetuses” because they know the facts change people’s minds. One study found that 78 percent of women considering abortion chose life after seeing their unborn child’s ultrasound image.

Awesome Video- the Flash of Light At Conception

Scientists have captured a flash of light that occurs at the moment of conception

From Lifesitenews.com

Amazing new video captures the flash of light the moment life begins

CHICAGO, April 29, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – Life begins with a spark – literally.

Researchers at Northwestern University have documented the striking event in a new video that accompanies a study published this week.

At the moment of conception, the egg releases massive amounts of zinc, which creates a spark that can be seen with the aid of a microscope.

“It was remarkable,” said Teresa Woodruff, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University’s medical school. “To see the zinc radiate out in a burst from each human egg was breathtaking.”

The research team had noted the zinc sparks before in mice eggs but had never observed the process in human beings.

“All of biology starts at the time of fertilization,” Woodruff said, “yet we know next to nothing about the events that occur in the human.”

One of the researchers, Northwestern chemistry professor Thomas O’Halloran, explained the science behind the process in 2014.

“The egg first has to stockpile zinc and then must release some of the zinc to successfully navigate maturation, fertilization and the start of embryogenesis,” he said. “On cue, at the time of fertilization, we see the egg release thousands of packages, each dumping a million zinc atoms, and then it’s quiet.”

“Each egg has four or five of these periodic sparks,” O’Halloran said. “It is beautiful to see, orchestrated much like a symphony.”

Since the amount of zinc in an egg correlates with successful implantation and birth, the Northwestern researchers are highlighting that their research may be used to assist in vitro fertilization.

But that raises concerns given the grave moral issues with IVF, which involves creating numerous embryos that are either killed or frozen. Moral theologians also emphasize that IVF is an injustice even for the children who are born as a result, as they are created in a lab rather than in the union of man and woman.

The study may have far-reaching consequences the research team did not intend, such as strengthening public belief in the longstanding scientific consensus that life begins at the moment of conception/fertilization.

Many of those who saw the Northwestern video said it testifies to the beauty of life and the shallow lies that buttress the argument of abortion-on-demand.

“I saw this, and I was blown away by it,” said Rush Limbaugh on his nationally syndicated radio program Thursday afternoon. “For anybody in the mainstream media to openly admit that life begins at conception” defies arguments that an unborn child is only “tissue mass.”
