Human Rights Commission to Consult About Religious Freedom

I suppose this is, well, needed. But here is the problem- once we consider that human rights are granted by Government then we give them the ability to take rights away.

I wouldn’t trust the Human Rights Commission with my freedom.

National conversation about freedom of religion set for November

NEWS | Tess Holgate

Thursday 3 September 2015

A new roundtable is set to put a spotlight on religious freedom in Australia, intended to spark a discussion that many commentators say is long overdue.

This November will see the Human Rights Commission convene their first religious freedom roundtable, with the aim of “stimulating much needed dialogue on exercising religious freedom in 21st century Australia,” said Commissioner Tim Wilson in a press release.

“Religious freedom is not only central to human rights, it is inextricable from other fundamental freedoms such as freedom of thought, conscience, speech and association, as well as property rights. But religious freedom cannot be unlimited. It has to be exercised with a respect and mindfulness of the rights of others such as equality before the law and government, and the freedoms of those without faith,” said Wilson.

In a speech for University of Notre Dame last year, Senator George Brandis wrote, “one of the fundamental freedoms of which we have heard far too little when we speak about human rights is the right to religious freedom. In fact, not only has religious freedom been neglected; it has actually been the subject of open attack from those who dominate much of our political discourse.”

In his speech, Senator Brandis explored the connections between the liberal view of society and traditional Christian theology, concluding that the former is a direct product of the latter.

“Religious belief is central to the human condition. Faith provides a means to help people that cannot be explained, even though it might be apprehended. It can also enable us to see ourselves as part of something larger, and thereby free ourselves from our base, everyday selfish concerns. Faith also has a unique ability to provide consolation in the face of life’s vicissitudes and to help us cope with its hardship,” says Senator Brandis.

“The Australia we know today is home to a diversity of faiths, united by tolerance, mutual respect and a commitment to democracy. Australians are free to choose their religion, and are able to practice their beliefs without intimidation and without interference, within the framework of Australian law and any attempt to interfere with that freedom is a profound outrage against our nation.”

Lyle Shelton, managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby says the roundtable is a positive move. “Tim Wilson is showing tremendous goodwill in wanting to address issues of religious freedom in Australia. I appreciate his desire to ensure there is religious freedom in this country.”

Shelton says the issue of religious freedom is most pronounced where there is a clash of rights. “Certain rights can come into conflict with the very important right of religious freedom and freedom of conscience. I don’t think we’ve worked out how to adequately address this.”

These competing rights make resolution “very difficult,” says Shelton. “The political debate at the moment is that if you don’t support people’s right to sexual expression, then somehow you are bigoted. While the debate remains framed like that, then it’s going to be very difficult [to find a resolution].

“Until we see a change in the way that this debate is conducted, I think the logical extrapolation is that it’s going to be hard for freedom of religion and freedom of conscience.”

Shelton wants to see a renewed emphasis on human rights as explained in the United Nations charter. “We’ve got to see the principles of the UN applied. That is, that religious freedom and freedom of conscience are a higher right that the right of sexual expression.”

Gordon Preece, director of the Ethos EA Centre for Christianity and Society thinks of it more as a balancing act, saying, “the balancing of religious freedom, which is a fundamental freedom, with things like sexual freedom is really important, and requires a lot of fine tuning.”

Preece is not naïve about the challenges to religious freedom in Australia, suggesting that one of our biggest challenges is figuring out how to make space in a secular society for both those who see religious freedom as an ultimate and fundamental freedom, and those who see sexual freedom as ultimate.

“It’s a big challenge for our society because sexual freedom is seen as an identity issue rather than just a behavioural issue. And then it lays claims on ultimate position. When it does that, that’s when you really get the clash with religious freedom because it will not book any competitors.”

This clash of freedoms is not going to be resolved with one sit-down at a roundtable.

“I think it’s going to be an ongoing conversation, over time. There are some major philosophical and worldview clashes which may not be able to be completely resolved – at the level of worldview – but may be able to be accommodated with compromises that allow for various groups to still have a sense of maintaining their integrity.”

Preece admits that finding and agreeing on such compromises will take a lot of grace and good listening – something that social media, and even mass media is not very good at doing.

“I think it’s important to try and develop non-adversarial forums that are face-to-face and allow the humanity of all parties to come through,” says Preece.

The challenges to religious freedom aren’t stopping any time soon. “In Victoria,” Preece says, “the Greens are proposing a bill that would drop religious exemptions in relationship to employment of practising gays in schools.”

“So [the roundtable discussion] is a good thing, and it’s good that Tim Wilson is proposing it. I think it’s helpful that this is coming to light now.”

The Human Rights Commission is calling for submissions from faith-based and other interest groups. Submissions close September 25.

“The Lion Is Roaring and Awakening His Church” Amanda Wells, Brisbane

Whirlwind and Angels Awakening Us

On a recent Monday night, as I was speaking in our School of the Prophets, a prophetic word started to rise up in me; and then at a recent prayer meeting, I sensed the whirlwind starting, and though I believe it is for the Church at large it’s also for the Nation of Australia.

The Church is in the season of her greatest awakening!

Job 38:1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said…

The Lord is speaking in this hour; we need to incline our ear. The Body of Christ is being awakened by the supernatural activity of God in His whirlwind. His angelic activity is being released to arouse His sleeping Bride to a position of intercession and travail in this day, so as to birth the promises and prophetic words that have been declared over her.

The Lion of the Tribe of Judah is Roaring

The Lion of the Tribe of Judah is starting to do something fresh and poured out from the Presence of the Lord. Jesus Christ is waking up His Church.

There is a strengthening coming into the Bride. She is being established and increasing as she walks in the revelations of generations gone by, and it culminates into a powerful and mighty release of the supernatural in this day. (Photo by Jennifer Page “In His Presence – Lion of Judah” via elijahshopper.com)

Many Christians have been seeing the number “11” this past year, and we know that 11 was seen in 9/11. So when we begin seeing the number 11, God could be revealing that security issues are at hand, BUT when we begin to see 11:11 God is awakening us in this hour to roar and mark our territory, to take dominion and put fear in the enemy’s camp. I believe God is sending a clear clarion call for the intercessors in this hour, and it is also a call to the Church to awake!

When we see 11:11 then we need to realize that God is doing something!!! In John 11:11, These things He said…” and then added, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go (Greek poreuo which means to lead and bring order to life) that I may wake him up.”

The Lion of the Tribe of Judah is awakening His friend, His lover and His Bride, and as she awakens order and abundant life will be established in her territory.

The Nation Shakes and Wealth is Released

The Lion of The Tribe of Judah is bringing order and going to war over this nation. The Lord is going to shift the very seat of government and authority in the realm of the spirit, and there will be an increase of power and the release of amazing, incredible miracles and the release of wealth.

Haggai 2:6:9 For thus says the Lord of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts. The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, says the Lord of hosts. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, says the Lord of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, says the Lord of hosts.

There is a shaking for an awakening and a releasing of wealth and glory in this season! The Lion of The Tribe of Judah is Roaring and He is awakening His Bride!

ElijahList Prophetic Resources

When a lion wants to show his domination in a territory, he releases a mighty roar and the sound of the roar travels through the territory and releases vibrations in the earth and every creature that feels the vibrations, realizes, that a lion is declaring his dominion!

This is the season that the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, within the sons of God, will release a sound, a declaration of such dominion, that it will be felt in the earth beneath and the hills will shake! The earth has been crying out for the sons to manifest for it to be subdued under the Kingdom of God.

Time For Transformation

The Church will begin to release strategies for city transformation in this hour. The doors to the offices of government are swinging open. These are Heaven’s doors opening wide! Look out, look out for the manifestations of Heaven to overflow in your midst. You will come to these offices with strategies of Heaven in your hands. God is releasing scrolls, blueprint plans, for transformational change.

There is a roar that is coming from the sons and daughters, and it is going to break open revival in regions! The earth is going to see the authority of the sons of God and it is going to shake nations! When the nations begin to shake, we will also see hidden wealth revealed. Hidden riches and treasure that have been in darkness up until now!

Australia and the Nations: Arise, Shine!

Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania: arise, awake and roar! Awakening is at hand.

The nations are about to come to the brightness of her rising (Isaiah 60). As the Bride arises and roars we will see one sound, the Bride, coming into a place of unity and harmony, not of agreement in theology but in identity! It will be awesome in its emergence. We are going to see the spheres of influence lock shields, and when they do, there is going to be a release of power and the government of God never seen before in the nations. (Photo via Wikipedia)

The sons of God are realizing their identity and they are beginning to understand their positioning, they are seated in Heavenly places and from that position they are going to start to rule and reign with Him, and as they do, Heaven’s government will be demonstrated and His Kingdom power is about to be released on the earth! Sons, no longer is your identity going to be stolen from you; you have awoken and you realize who you are and to Whom you belong.

We suddenly will realize who is within us and as we do, a roar never heard in your region before is about to be heard and you are about to take dominion of the territory assigned to you as the roar puts fear into the heart of the enemy!

Heaven is about to occupy earth and we will see an increased activity of angels, restorations and healings, miracles, salvations, the supernatural, and many will witness the glory of God as it covers the earth. The Church is arising in all of her glory, beauty, splendor, honor and wealth!

Australia Day

The definitive Aussie poem by Dorothea Mackellar.

Little known fact: if you go to the public toilets in her home town of Gunnedah you will hear this poem recited over loud speakers.

My Country

e13bc-clouds4_thumbThe love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me!

A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die –
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold –
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land –
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand –
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

Fading Glory

The excitement is over, the Bunnies won their first premiership in a hundred years  (I exaggerate a tad) and NRL goes on holidays for a couple of months.

As I was listening to the news this morning and the soundtrack of “Glory glory to South Sydney”, the commentators waxed lyrical about the glorious victory and how the team had been redeemed after years in the wilderness. (That sounds sort of familiar).

So, after school goes back tomorrow and the cricket season starts, who is going to care about this? By Christmas who will even remember the score? And by the start of next footy season we will have to stop and think about who won the competition in 2014.

If you think I’m overstating the case, ask yourself what was the score in the last State of Origin? Only the die hard fans remember just a few months later.

Sporting glory is a fading glory. The crowds are entertained for a night and people have something to talk about at work the next day, but the accolades dim quickly. What excites us and seems so important right now soon loses its lustre after the event.

There is a reason for this.

Human beings are created for an eternal glory, an immortal honour that goes way beyond the sporting arena.

We were created to worship God, the ultimate glory, and to share in His nature. We get so easily distracted by the immediate things we see in front of us. We settle for a pretend glory and think that’s all there is.

Jesus came to bridge the gap between the human and the divine. He has prepared a place in eternity for His followers, and a glorious destiny we can only imagine.

Don’t settle for anything less.

A Happy Story

Amidst all of the news coverage of ISIS, Boko Haram and Hamas wreaking death and suffering on so many people it is good to remember that these terrorists don’t speak for ordinary Muslims. The stories of crazy Australians living on  the disability pension and going off to jihad with their little boys and posing with severed heads shock most people.

Let me tell you a happy story about some decent Muslim people.

Margaret had been looking on EBay for a new (slightly used) lounge suite, and she wanted the best. King Furniture use the same manufacturer of springs as Porsche, and their furniture is nice but expensive. She found one in Sydney that seemed ideal but was pipped at the post. As a result, she found out about a web-site where you can ask for a quote and independent trucking companies bid for the job. There was one bid and the price was under $500 which seemed excellent.

On Thursday, another lounge came up, right manufacturer, good colour and excellent “Buy it now” price, located at Katoomba. She contacted the carrier to find out if he would do this job for the same price and he said “yes”.

She bought it, paid for it and organised the carrier. It was here before lunch today, two days later.

The team was a man and wife, she dressed in the traditional Muslim head covering. They are just the nicest, friendliest people and make you feel good even just being around them for the 15 minutes to unload the furniture.

The couple work hard- they must have started out at 6 this morning to get to Katoomba by 7.15. They would have been lucky to make $200 for the day’s work when you take the fuel and other running expenses out. They are friendly, do exactly what is promised, going the extra mile with a smile. They see Australia as a country with endless opportunities to build a business (oddly enough called Schemozzle) and earn enough to give their children a good education.

So next time you see the latest atrocity or the violent demonstrations or the demands of activists that our nation bends to conform to Arabic culture and Sharia law, just remember Khaeld and his wife- two hard working Aussies who happen to be Muslims.

The “Culture War” is Real

Our society is now so far removed from its christian roots that basic Biblical teaching is deemed offensive. I wouldn’t have given “Revolve” to primary school children, but there s far more explicit stuff in “Dolly” and “Girlfriend”.

Victoria is further down the  slippery slope than New South Wales but we can’t be far behind. When Bibles in a traditional format where distributed to Year 6 students in Narrabri a few years ago, some parents were outraged.

From the ABC:

Access Ministries under scrutiny after ‘inappropriate and offensive’ material given out at Victorian primary school

Victoria’s Education Department has launched an investigation into what it calls inappropriate and offensive religious material distributed at a primary school.

The ABC understands religious educators handed out material at Torquay College last year that instructed children to seek counselling if they had homosexual feelings.

The material also claims that girls who wear revealing clothes are inviting sexual assault and that masturbation and sex before marriage are sinful.

The so-called Biblezines were given as graduation gifts as part of a program run by the state’s Christian education provider Access Ministries.

Naja Voorhoeve, whose seven-year-old child received the material from an older student, says special religious instruction (SRI) providers should be banned from public schools.

“If the SRI providers were prepared to breach our trust in this matter, you have absolutely no idea about the other things that they’re doing, about instances in other schools where this material might have been handed out,” she said.

“My personal position is that SRI volunteers should not be allowed in schools because their programs cannot be adequately monitored.

“What they do is not part of the curriculum… so they’re basically let in on their own.”

The department says it has launched an investigation into the material and the actions taken by the provider.

“The materials are totally inappropriate and offensive and have no place in our schools,” it said in a statement.

“The department has scope to review the accreditation status of providers once are investigations are complete.”

Access Ministries has been contacted for comment.

Lyle Shelton: Why silence is no longer an option

From ACL:

Why silence is no longer an option

parliament house

The Greens sure are committed.

Last week in the Senate they tried and failed to remove the Lord’s Prayer from parliament.

Since 1901, the prayer has been recited at the start of each sitting day in the senate and house of representatives by the president and speaker respectively.

A group of committed pray-ers is always present in each chamber. No one is forced.

Australia did not become what it is in a vacuum. Christianity had a profound impact on the development of western institutions, including parliament.

While not everyone in Australia is Christian (although more than 60 per cent tell the census they are), nothing changes the fact that Christianity made a significant contribution to making Australia what it is today.

It is a simple fact that Christianity is part of our cultural heritage in a way that other religions are not. That is no disrespect to them. The ethics and ideas of other religions simply did not have the same impact on the formation of western values and the Australian nation.

As the pre-European peoples of this land, indigenous people, are of course a huge part of our cultural heritage. Recognition of their cultural heritage is also acknowledged in parliament each day and that is fair enough. The Greens have not sought to remove this.

Most of us would condemn the cutting down of a 113 year old tree, but when it comes to our cultural heritage the Greens are happy to fell any vestiges of the values of our past.

Greens Senator Richard Di Natale cites the separation of church and state for wanting to remove the prayer.

This misunderstanding of the concept is becoming wearisome. The Greens and others who abuse this concept are attempting to cloak their secularism in neutrality and objectivity, but in reality seem to be excluding Christianity in order to substitute their own secular irreligion.

Australia was founded with the principle of separation of church and state but it was never meant to keep religious ideas, people or even prayers out of public life.

It was simply to ensure that Australia, unlike Britain, did not have an established church constitutionally entwined with the state.

The idea was for all religions to be allowed to flourish without any being favoured by the state.
