Reflection on Luke 23:33-43

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+23:33-43

Scripture

Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

Observation

Jesus is nailed to the cross, between two criminals. He calls out “Father forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.”

The crowd watches; the leaders mock. The leaders say that if Jesus is the Messiah He should save Himself. The Romans scoff at His claim to be King of the Jews. Even one of the crucified criminals mocks Jesus.

But there is faith in the picture. The other crucified man calls out to Jesus, “Remember me,” and Jesus replies, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Application

So many mockers and scoffers! Next Sunday many churches around the world will read this passage to celebrate “Christ the King.”

What a declaration this makes. Christ rejected by many of his own people, deserted by His closest friends, and now mocked by all except one wretched man nailed to a cross; this is the King!

What sort of Kingdom is this? What King is this?

Jesus is lifted high for the world to see, on a cross not a throne. God declares “This is my beloved Son! This is your King!”

And the whole world mocks Him.

Just one man has the eyes of faith to see reality.

Where am I In this story?

Am I a “disciple” huddling fearfully in a house somewhere?

Am I the religious leader looking for personal power and prestige, rejecting God in the process?

Am I part of the ruling elite, so focussed on maintaining the status quo that I could crucify the Son of God?

Am I the mocking criminal?

Or am I that other man, the one man of faith?

Jesus is the King rejected by every layer of society. He is the King who comes to power by laying everything down- even His own life.

This is our God.

Prayer

Jesus remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

Lord please open my eyes to see the reality rather than illusion; to see the world as you see it; to see myself as you see me.

Today I identify with the man of no repute, a condemned and dying criminal, worshipping a King who made Himself a man of no repute. But I see through the veil to see the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, laying down His life for the world and for me.

Thank you for the promise, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Amen

Reflection on Colossians 1:11-20

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Colossians 1:11-20

Scripture

He has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his dear Son who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

Observation

Paul pays for the Colossians that they will be strengthened with God’s glorious power.

God has brought us out of the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His Son. Jesus purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

Christ is God made visible. He preceded creation and reigns over all things. Everything in creation was made for Him and through Him.

Christ is the head of His church- and therefore my head. He is reconciling all things to Himself.

Application

We were trapped in a hostile, foreign country, but God rescued us. We were destined for hell, but God intervened and rescued us- He rescued me! I was dead and done, but He came and rescued me.

God’s way is not by might and power. He did not send in a military force with tanks, helicopters and bombs. No, He gave away His power, becoming flesh and dying on a cross.

This is our God. The God who spoke galaxies into existence with a word. The God who holds the whole of creation in His hand, who could crush everything instantly in his zeal to end evil. This God became weak, subjecting Himself to sinful men and women.

And He died.

In His death the great transfer took place. The guilty were forgiven and rescued from darkness.

At the cross I died and my sin died with me. I am a new creation, no longer bound by the chains of the dark kingdom. I am a citizen of a new kingdom, the kingdom of God. Reborn, released, refined.

Prayer

Jesus my Lord, you are my Saviour, my Redeemer. I was trapped in sin, but you rescued me. I was bound in chains, trapped in the kingdom of darkness, but you came and brought me out into your glorious Kingdom.

I never earned this, never deserved it. But your love is greater than my sin. Your mercy triumphs over my evil ways..

Your glorious majesty has won my heart. Thank you for setting me free, Help me to live as a child of the light not as a child of the darkness. Amen.

Reflection on Jeremiah 23:1-6

jeremiah-23

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=jeremiah+23.1-6

Scripture

And this will be his name: The Lord is our Righteousness. In that day Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety.

Observation

Sorrow is waiting for the shepherds of God’s people, for they have destroyed and scattered the ones they were supposed to protect. God promises to pour judgement over those people, but He will gather the remnant of His scattered flock. God will gather them into His sheepfold and they will be safe and increase in number.

At the right time the Lord will raise up a king who will do what is right and just. He will be called the Lord is our Righteousness.

Application

The Lord calls all of us, but especially leaders, to be righteous. This righteousness comes not from our own ethical standards or sense of fair play, but as a gift from the Lord.

The Lord is our Righteousness means that the Lord is our source of righteousness. He declares that us to be right on the basis of the cross. He then expects us to live right, that is, without sin.

This is a journey, a walk of one step after another. We take a few steps towards righteousness and then we stumble. But the goal is always to walk in the ways of the Lord our Righteousness.

Prayer

Jesus you are the Lord my Righteousness. Thank you for declaring me to be righteous in your blood. Please lead me in the right ways so that I learn to be like you. Amen.

Reflection on 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13

2thes3-13

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Thessalonians+3.6-13

Scripture

As for the rest of you, dear brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good.

Observation

Paul commands the Thessalonians to have nothing to do with those brothers and sisters who refuse to work. He set the example himself of not depending on the people he ministered to. He had previously told them anyone who will not work should not eat.

Yet some of the Thessalonians remain idle and meddle in other people’s business. He encourages them to work and to never tire of doing good deeds.

Application

Having an ethic of work rather than idleness is a long-standing christian (even pre-Christian) virtue. The Thessalonians may have been expecting Christ to return any moment, but Paul says they must continue to work and to do good deeds.

Contributing positively to society- whether through working for wages or running a business or through volunteering- is a part of our witness.

Christians must not only talk about the Saviour them must live lives which show that following Jesus makes a difference.

Whatever our financial arrangements, we must all ensure that our lives reflect the holiness of Christ.

Prayer

Lord you command us to never get tired of doing good. Please show me how to live up to this commandment today. Amen.

Reflection on Luke 20:27-38

heaven

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+20:27-38

Scripture

And the fact that the dead are raised, Moses himself showed in the story about the bush where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is the God not of the dead but of the living, for to him all of them are alive.”

Observation

Some Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection, come to Him with a far-fetched story about a man who dies, leaving his wife to his brother who also dies and passes her on to the next brother. The question then is whose wife is she in eternity?

Jesus responds that they do not have any idea about the resurrection. People in this age marry, but in the resurrection they will not because they have eternal life in the presence of God. Jesus then goes on to show that the resurrection is a scriptural idea as the living God described himself to Moses as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Application

Those who are sceptical of the gospel make fun of our hope of eternal life. Like the Sadducees, they extrapolate the present temporal world into the eternal realm, and make fun of their own assumptions.

The kingdom of God is not limited in time nor is it restricted by sickness and death. We shall be transformed, raised and equipped to live for ever in the presence of God.

There are many things we do not know about eternal life but we do know it is real. We know that there will be no more sadness and no more loss.

Whatever God has in store for us it will be good!

Prayer

Thank you Lord for your promise of eternal life. Amen.

Reflection on 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5,13-17

2_thessalonians

Passage: https://www.biblegatesway.com/passage/?search=2+Thessalonians+2.1-5,13-17

Scripture

Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.

Observation

Concerning the coming of the Lord, Paul encourages the brethren not to become unsettled by prophecies and reports supposedly coming from him saying that the day has already happened. That day will not happen until the man of lawlessness is revealed who will oppose every godly thing and proclaim himself to be God.

Paul encourages the Thessalonians to stand firm and hold onto Paul’s teaching.

Application

End time prophecies have always been a source for alarmist teaching. We can become very unsettled, and even fearful, because of false teaching, false prophecies and speculation presented as truth.

When I first became a christian in the 1970’s, the then USSR was supposed to be allying itself with China to bring on the battle of Armageddon. The Great Tribulation was supposed to happen by 1988. Lately the rise of ISIS and Britain’s vote to leave the European Union have all been “found” in Bible prophecy.

We are called by God to know the Scriptures (all of them and not just parts of Revelation) and to trust Him. He is the one- the only one- who knows the day, the hour and the manner of Christ’s coming.

Prayer

Come Lord Jesus, cone. Help me Lord to trust in you and to know that all of history is in your hands. Amen.

Reflection on Haggai 2:1-9

dreamstime_s_38719428-800x470.jpg

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Haggai2:1-9

Scripture

“I will shakes all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,” says the Lord Almighty.

Observation

Haggai calls to the High Priest, the governor and the remnant of the people. After the rebuilding of the Temple, some of the people who remember the old Temple are feeling that the new building does not match the old one.

Haggai brings the word of the Lord to encourage them. The Lord reminds them that He is still with them, as He has been since He led them out of Egypt.

In a little while the Lord will shake the nations, and people will come from all nations to worship at the Temple. The Lord declares that the glory of the new Temple will be greater than that of the old house,

Application

As we get older we can pine for the “Good Old Days.” We may look to a simpler age, a happier time in our family or perhaps an exciting time when God seemed to be at work in our own lives or in the church.

God is always with us and He is always planning a “new thing.” His glory increases in our lives as we continue to surrender to him.

Sometimes the work of the Lord is exciting and busy, like harvest time. Other times He is working deeply where we cannot see. But always, it is the same God bringing about His purposes.

Prayer

Father please help me to understand how you are working in me at this time. May I trust that the glory of the present time is greater than the glories of the past. Amen.

Reflection on Luke 19:1-10

zacchaeus

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+19.1-10

Scripture

Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this house today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham.”

Observation

Jesus enters Jericho, where a chief tax collector named Zacchaeus climbs a sycamore tree to get a glimpse of the Messiah. Jesus comes to the tree, looks up and calls Zacchaeus down, inviting himself to Zacchaues’ house.

Zacchaeus joyfully takes Jesus to his house, but the self-righteous people grumble at Jesus going to the house of a sinner. At the meal, Zacchaeus tells Jesus that he is going to give half his wealth to the poor and repay those whom he has cheated.

Jesus replies, “Salvation has come to this house today. The Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

Application

The issue of salvation confounds those who are religious. They cannot grasp the power of grace to transform sinners. As they don’t consider themselves to be sinners, they have no concept of grace.

Jesus wakes us up to His grace. Every sin, MY sins, even the darkest ones, are capable of being forgiven, repented and removed.

As we see His never ending grace to us, our hearts are changed, and those things that once gave us security, pleasure or power seem so undesirable in the light of His love. Sin stops being fun.

The tricky part is maintaining our awe of God’s grace and remembering where we came from so that we avoid that other awful sin- self-righteousness.

Prayer

Lord your grace is beyond my words. You continue to rescue sinners like me and to forgive sins like mine. Help me Lord to stay on the highway of humility, and free from all forms of self-righteousness that would blind me to grace. Amen.

Reflection on 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

2_thessalonians

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/search?%s=2+Thessalonians+1.1-12

Scripture

We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing.

Observation

Paul tells the Thessalonians that he always thanks God for them because they are growing in faith and in love for one another.

They will be counted worthy of the Kingdom of God for which they are suffering. When the Lord Jesus returns, those who trouble them will receive judgement. All who do not know God will be punished with everlasting judgement and shut out from the presence and majesty of the Lord.

Paul prays for them constantly that God will fulfil every good deed prompted by their faith.

Application

What pleases God about our walk with Him is that we grow in faith in Him and in love for our brothers and sisters. Along with this, naturally, comes opposition. This may take the form of outright persecution or more subtle forms of mockery and derision.

In all of this, we must look to the big picture, that God is working out His purposes in us and through us. Those who remain hostile to God will experience God’s rigthteous judgement, eternal separation from Him.

That judgement will come; we don’t need to make it happen. In the meantime we set our hearts on growing in faith and love.

Prayer

Eternal Father, you are holy and righteous, gracious and loving. Help me to grow in my experience of you each and every day

Reflection on Habakkuk 1:1-2:4

habakkuk

Passage: https://www.biblegateway.com/search?%s=Habakkuk+1.2-2.4

Scripture
The revelation awaits its appointed time
It speaks of the end and will not prove false
Though it linger wait for it
It will certainly come and will not delay

Observation
Habakkuk calls out to the Lord and asks Him to do something about the violence and injustice he sees in the land.

The Lord replies that He is going to do something amazing. He will raise up the Babylonians to sweep across the whole earth.

The Lord tells Habakkuk to write down this revelation on tablets so that a messenger may run with it. The revelation awaits its appointed time. It will be proved true, but they are to wait for its appointed day.

Application
Habakkuk prays about violence and injustice, but the answer he gets is not what he hoped for, God deals with things in ways that we do not expect but which are always better and much wiser than we could imagine.

The Lord tells Habakkuk to wait for the right time, the appointed time. There is a revelation, a prophetic word, a destiny for all of us. We sometimes get discouraged because the time of God’s action is not our time.

God deals in seasons and appointments. We want everything now. God works at the right time, the best time. The promised “suddenly” seems to take forever to come and then bursts into existence before our eyes.

God acts in ways that are different to our expectations and with a different timing to what we expect. We have to learn to wait and trust.

Prayer
Father, you do all things well in their time. Help me to trust you even when answers seem slow in coming. Amen.
