The Wallabies: winless, but woke

by James Macpherson | 23 Oct, 2020 | Opinion

HAVING gotten rid of their star black player, the Australian rugby team is set to take a knee at the start of their next game in support of Black Lives Matter.

The Australian Rugby Union chased Israel Folau out of the sport and eventually out of the country for his supposedly outdated minority views.

Now, with Folau out of the way, the woke Wallabies plan to signal their support for minorities.

Confused?

That’s because you’re thinking. To enjoy performative virtue you must be woke enough to feel, but never conscious enough to think.

Senior Wallaby Dane Haylett-Petty revealed this week that the team will consider taking a knee during the national anthem before the third Bledisloe Cup Test against the All Blacks on October 31.

“We’ve got a very diverse group and we see that as a big strength of ours,” he said.

Not strength enough to tolerate diverse views though, or Folau would still be playing for Australia rather than running around for the Catalans Dragons in France.

But again, you’re over thinking things. And that’s no way to enjoy politically correct sport.

Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan said the Wallabies would be wearing their new Indigenous-designed jersey for the October 31 game.

“We’re very proud of our Aboriginal and Indigenous heritage, and we’re going to promote it proudly,” the proud chairman said with pride.

Except that no player of Indigenous heritage has been picked in the squad. He said,

“I think it shows that we’ve got to open more player pathways for indigenous rugby players, but what it also says is that we’re very committed to an inclusive culture.”

So there are no indigenous players included in the squad but the non-indigenous players will wear jumpers featuring indigenous squiggles to prove rugby has an inclusive culture.

It makes complete sense, provided you don’t think about it.

The Wallabies also made a big deal about the fact that new coach Dave Rennie has been encouraging players to embrace different cultures, even teaching them to sing Fijian and Tongan songs.

If this news makes you wonder how much better the Wallabies would be at singing Tongan ditties had they not punted their star Tongan player for expressing views commonly held in Tonga, stop it. You can’t square a circle any more than the Wallabies can beat New Zealand.

And there is no point wondering why, if our footballers are going to sing, they don’t instead learn the words to the Australian national anthem so that they can actually sing it before games rather than pretend.

Of course, the winless but very woke Wallabies could ditch all the virtue signalling and focus on winning rugby games.

But that thought doesn’t seem to have occurred to them for a long time now.

Rugby Australia Has A Problem With The Bible

Apparently Raelene Castle has ditched all pretence that the sacking of Israel Folau was anything other than religious discrimination.

According to Miranda Devine in yesterday’s Sunday Telegraph, even if he had simply photocopied the relevant pages from the Bible in his social media posts that would have been a problem.

Here is part of the transcript from the code of conduct meeting in May:

Apparently quoting from the Islamic texts would not have been a problem:

‘Will you persist in these lewd acts which no other nation has committed before you? You lust after men instead of women. Truly, you are a degenerate people.’ Quran 7:81-82

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Loot, execute the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.” Abu Dawud 4462 (This is a sahih hadith)

As Devine concludes:

Castle made a mountain out of a molehill, and has thrown Australian rugby into disrepute as a result, trashing morale and sabotaging the Wallabies’ chances in a World Cup year.

Having unilaterally condemned the foundational document of Judaeo-Christian civilisation as akin to hate speech, she [Castle] boasted in a press conference that her decision was a “landmark” which “will change the landscape for rugby and sport”.

There’s one person who should have been sacked, and it wasn’t Folau.

Which War Are You Fighting?

I read a lot of political and cultural commentary blogs. As you might imagine there has been a lot written about Israel Folau over the last few weeks.

For somebody who is apathetic about sport generally and Rugby Union in particular, I have written a lot myself about Israel Folau.

It is clear that many of the so-called “quiet Australians” who ignored the self-appointed political and cultural elites last month to vote in a Liberal/ National Party Government, are now ready to revolt against the moral standards the same elites have bullied us into acquiescing to. That much is clear from the huge support for the appeal to fund Folau’s legal fight.

For christians it is time to wake up and start fighting not just the cultural war but the spiritual war that is at the heart of this.

Writing at xyz.net.au David Hilton wrote a sentence that stuck in my mind:

The reason Christians have kept losing the culture war of the last fifty years is because we’ve been fighting a culture war while our enemies have been fighting a spiritual war.

https://www.xyz.net.au/unlike-globohomo-christianity-isnt-a-religion/

He goes on to describe how the progressive left has all the hallmarks of a religion- a moral code, sacred places, deities, proselytism (what we call evangelism), judgement and excommunication. Because it is a religion, not merely a cultural construct, it cannot be fought as a culture war.

This is very much a spiritual war that will define the future of this nation. Will we let satan crush the church or will we crash through the gates of hell?

My fear is that the church will continue in its sleepy way, neglecting the spiritual weapons at its disposal while the enemy continues in its mission to destroy us.

It’s been long said of western churches that the prayer meeting is the least attended activity of the church. I know that’s true of most churches, including my own.

Wake up christians! We need to pray as never before, not just for Israel Folau but for every aspect of our culture. We need to open ourselves to the direction of the Holy Spirit so that we can tale on the forces of darkness and shine the light into the world.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”. (2 Corinthians 10:4,5)
