From the ABC:
Scientist amazed by deadly jellyfish swarm
A marine scientist says he is amazed by the discovery of a huge swarm of deadly box jellyfish on the east coast of far north Queensland.
Queensland scientists have only ever seen large congregations of box jellyfish in creeks on the remote west coast of Cape York.
That was until TV news cameraman Tim Fearnley's boat was surrounded by hundreds of them while he was fishing in a creek near Cardwell, south of Cairns recently.
"I wasn't too happy because you couldn't do any fishing, but it was pretty scary," he said.
"You didn't want to go anywhere near the water.
"I was with my dad and he's fished around here for years and he's never seen anything like it before."
Stinger expert Jamie Seymour says the discovery means it should now be much easier to study the animals.
"[The jellyfish find] not only makes [the research] cheaper, but give it more relevance because we've now got data for what's happening in our own backyard, which is more important," he said.
"This is the first hard evidence that we've got of large numbers of very large box jellyfish in the creeks on the eastern side of the cape, so [it's] pretty exciting stuff."
Dr Seymour says he will be heading to Cardwell, net in hand, as soon as the weather clears.
Interesting question, what brought them all there in such a swarm, I hope they learn some new and exciting things.

Box jellyfish are exceedingly venomous, and are generally something of a natural hazard for swimmers in summer in Queensland. There is one that is very small and transparent and one sting will kill a person in minutes. They are very interesting, if dangerous creatures.

We have jellyfish too, but I'm sure nothing as venomous as that. I made a small study of venomous animals (and even bought a book wih pictures) when we first moved to Florida. My youngest son, Aaron, was always outdoors and I felt he needed to be educated about what he should and shouldn't touch.

Very wise. We try to encourage toddlers to stay away from spiders and snakes until they are old enough to tell the difference between good and bad ones. Our greatest fear is to find a child playing with a pretty spider with a rd stripe on its back.I believe that soome species of jellyfish in Australia are amongst the most venomous creatures on the planet… thankfully they are mainly in the tropics and usually fairly remote locations.
