Child abuse costs nearly $11b per year

It's a bit harsh to reduce human suffering to a $ amount, but maybe having a measured cost will mean somebody might be prepared to invest in preventing it. From the ABC:

Child abuse costs nearly $11b per year: report

A joint report by the Australian Childhood Foundation and Access Economics says child abuse costs the country almost $11 billion every year.

The report also found the number of unreported child abuse cases to be nearly five times higher than what official figures suggest.

Dr Joe Tucci from the Childhood Foundation says governments need to do more to prevent child abuse.

"Children pay the price of child abuse in the trauma that they experience, the community pays for it in downstream costs like crime," he said.

"Having to deal with increased mental health problems, and increases in drug and alcohol addiction – that's what the $11 billion is all about."

Dr Tucci says the public also needs to more pro-active in preventing abuse.

"Child abuse is still very much an invisible problem in Australia," he said.

"It's almost like we've become a bystander to the problem of child abuse and we're not actively involved or not actively engaged in attempts to prevent abuse or to respond to it once we identify it."
