Scripture
Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out of the rock as the elders looked on.
Observation
The people are walking at the Lord's command, going from place to place as the pillar of fire and smoke directs them.
They arrive at a place with no water. The people complain to Moses and demand that water from him. It must get quite heated as Moses tells the Lord that they are ready to stone him.
The Lord tells Moses to take some elders as witnesses and to strike the rock with his staff. When he does so water comes pouring from the rock.
Application
This passage emphasises that this is about obedience to the Lord. They are travelling at God;s direction. They stop at this place at God's direction. Moses strikes the rock at God's direction.
Most of the people just don't get it. They have a visible sign of God's presence. They have experiences daily miracles of provision. And still they forget that God will provide all they need.
We can tend to get frustrated, even angry, with God when he seems to let us down.
The fact is that God knows what I need and will provide it- if I live in faithful obedience to Him.
Prayer
Father I am sorry for the times I have failed to believe that you provide what I need. Please help me to trust you more. Amen.
