Reflection on 1 Corinthians 12:1-13

Scripture
We have all been baptised into one body by one Spirit and we all share the same Spirit.

Observation
The Holy Spirit is God's gift to the church to equip us to be all that He intends us to be.

Although the English translations insert the word “gift” here, there is no thought that these are gifts in the sense that God gives us something to own.

We are channels of blessing for others and the Holy Spirit is the one who blesses the church through such means as words of knowledge and wisdom, prophecies, healiings etc.

These things are distributed as needed at each occasion. Today I might exercise faith but tomorrow it could be discernment of spirits.

God takes many different people and binds us into one body. We are different but one- one Spirit, one Body, one baptism.

Application
Our walk with Jesus is, or should be, all about Jesus and not about ourselves.

If we are attentive to the Holy Spirit, we find all kinds of activities being released through us. The Holy Spirit opens up new possibilities of service and ministry as we make ourselves available to Him.

But when we focus on our own “gifts” and ministries, we close down the possibility of God's activity in our lives.

Sadly this issue of spiritual gifts which should unite us in our mission in the world often divides us. People can obsess over manifestations of the Spirit, but we need to focus on the will of the Spirit.

Prayer
Spirit of the Living God fall afresh on me. Let me be open to your sovereign will in my neighbourhood today. Amen.
