Scripture
“You will receive power then the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere- in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria and to the ends of the earth.”
Observation
Despite the resurrection, the disciples were still focussed on small-time concerns. “Is this the time to free Israel?” they ask.
Something much bigger than politics is happening. The power to establish God's kingdom is about to be unleashed, empowering these people to take the Good News everywhere. They are thinking local, but God is going global!
Jesus is then taken up to heaven, and the disciples return to Jerusalem where they spend the days praying.
Application
It is all too easy to get distracted by the immediate issues. There are still bills to pay and mouths to feed even if God has called us to a global cause.
We have to keep a balance between the pull of the world and the call of the Spirit- without compromising.
The key to this balancing act is in constant prayer. Like the disciples we have to set aside special times of prayer as well as learning to pray in the daily routines and challenges of life.
As we do this we find the Holy Spirit leading us into exciting adventures in ministry.
Prayer
Holy Spirit lead and guide my every step. Whether I am engaged in daily life or specifically spiritual activities, come and be at the centre of my thoughts, words and deeds. Amen.
