Scripture
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

Observation
Paul gives here a series of short instructions aimed at illustrating what it means to love God and to love one another.

Christians must be above reproach in all things. We must love one another and even love those who persecute us.

Love must replace vengeance, good works must crowd out evil.

Application
Our lives must be consumed by the love and holiness of God. This comes out above all in our daily relationships because that is where our true nature is revealed.

Paul is very clear that love must be dominant. We must continue to love even those who do us wrong. Rather than seeking vengeance on those who mistreat us, we must continue to love them trusting God to bring about His purposes.

This is all a part of overcoming evil with good.

Prayer
Lord, it's hard at times to allow my natural desires for revenge or for hateful thoughts to be consumed by your love. Help me to love my neighbour even when he is unkind to me. Amen.
