Reflection on Exodus 12:1-14

Scripture
“But the blood on your door posts will serve as a sign, marking where you are staying. When I see the blood I will pass over you. The plague of death will not touch you when I strike the land of Egypt.”

Observation
It is the day of the Passover and God gives the Israelites instructions on how to prepare for their redemption and for future celebrations.

Each family is to select a young sheep or goat and care for it for a few days. On the evening of the fourteenth of the month they are to kill the lamb, roast them and eat them. They are to smear blood from the lamb on their door posts.

At the time of the first Passover, the Lord will pass through Egypt killing the first-born son in each household, except for those who have blood smeared on their door posts.

The people of Israel are to celebrate this feast for ever because the Lord has rescued them from their captivity in Egypt.

Application
The Lord has been ramping up His pressure on the Egyptians to release His people. Now a judgement is to be unleashed that will strike the heart of every family in the land.

But there is a way out for those who will receive it. Judgement will not visit the homes of those who smear lamb's blood on their door posts.

This is an act of faith. Will the people believe the coming judgement? Will they receive the offer of grace?

The blood of the lamb is a symbol of the blood of Jesus which is the only way to avert God's judgement on sin. Unless we are covered by the blood we will be judged.

This is again an act of faith.

Prayer
Precious Lord Jesus, thank you for pouring out your blood and becoming my Passover lamb. Thank you that your sacrifice covers over my sins and rescues me from all judgement. Amen.

  1. I read the other day that the reason why God accepted Abel's offering and not Cain's was becuse Abel's didn't have any blood (or so said Tozer). Interesting…there's got to be a blood sacrifice.
