Reflection on Philippians 2:1-13

Scripture
Make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another and working together with one mind and purpose.

Observation
Paul points out the connection between the benefits of salvation with our responsibility to walk in peace and unity with our brethren in one mind and purpose.

The key attitude is humility, putting the interests of others above our own interests. This is the attitude of Christ who laid aside all of the trappings of deity to become human and to die for our sake.

Application
Christianity is not just about individual salvation. Whenever we reduce discipleship to “what I get out of it” we miss the point.

We are to be imitators of Christ, disciples, learners. To do that requires humility.

We must lay aside our own self-interest where that gets in the way of loving our brothers and sisters.

Christ laid aside everything for the sake of saving not just me but also the other people in my church, people in other churches and unsaved people all around me. Therefore I must also die to myself for their sake.

Prayer
Father help me to relinquish my rights and selfish ambitions for your sake. Amen.
