Scripture
“Many are called but few are chosen.”
Observation
Jesus tells a parable about a wedding banquet for the son of a king. When the feast is ready the invited guests refuse to come.
The king sends out more servants but the invitation is still ignored as people go about their business. Some even kill the servants.
Now the king invites people from the street corners and everyone, good and bad alike, come in. One of the newcomers isn't wearing appropriate wedding clothes. The king orders him bound and thrown into the outer darkness.
Application
This telling of the parable is particularly violent. It seems that a king's banquet can be a dangerous event!
The king punishes two groups of people- those who kill the servants and the one who is improperly dressed.
To share in the banquet of the king it is not enough to accept the invitation. We also have to be properly dressed.
Paul tells us to clothe ourselves with Christ. There is nothing mystical about this- it just means allowing the character and power of Christ to fill every part of our lives. Our hearts must be so transformed by the grace of the Holy Spirit that we carry Christ with us wherever we go, so that His character becomes our character.
We can't turn up to God's banquet wearing our old nature.
Prayer
Change my heart O God. Help me to put on Christ every day. Amen.
