Reflection on Exodus 33:12-23

Scripture
Then Moses said, If you don't personally go with us, don't make us leave this place. How will anyone know that you look favourably in me and on your people if you don't go with us? For you presence among us sets us apart form all other people on the earth.”

Observation
Moses asks the Lord for understanding of His ways. The Lord says He will personally go with Moses. Moses says he won't go without the Lord.

Moses asks the Lord to show him His glory. The Lord says that He will pass before Moses but he will have to cover Moses to protect him from certain death.

Application
Moses was desperate for intimacy with the Lord. He wasn't content with a distant relationship. The Law wasn't enough. Hearing God's voice wasn't enough.

Moses had to see the glory of the presence of God. It was God's presence that set Israel apart and Moses wanted more of this, to know the personality of God, to dwell in His presence.

Many Christians are happy to relate to God at a distance. They fear being scorched by His glory.

But we have to keep pressing on, stirring up the passion to know the Lord and nothing else.

Prayer
Father let me be like Moses, driven by the passion to know you more and more. Amen.
