Reflection on Micah 3:5-12

Scripture
But as for me, I am filled with power- with the Spirit of the Lord. I am filled with justice and strength to boldly declare Israel's sin and rebellion.

Observation
False prophets are leading God's people astray. They are corrupted by greed, promising peace to those who pay them and judgement on those who don't pay them.

These prophets, together with the other leaders in Israel and Judah, are building a rotten and corrupt society. Everyone from rulers to priests is motivated by greed and not by what is right, They believe they are untouchable because the Lord is on their side.

On the contrary, says Micah, because of them judgement is coming which will lay the city to waste.

Application
It is very tempting to believe that because God is on our side then we are entitled to take shortcuts, or that the rules that apply to “sinners” don't apply to us- after all we are saved by grace.

It is easy to justify getting too much change at the checkout as “God's provision” or to take a handicapped parking spot because we are on God's business,

“We are not under the Law” we tell ourselves, conveniently forgetting the verses that tell us to submit to the authorities over us.

Corruption and injustice do not necessarily belong only to the people at the top. It starts with a feeling of entitlement and an attitude of self-centredness from people at all levels of society.

Prayer
Lord help me to walk with integrity in all my dealings and in all my relationships. Amen.
