Reflection on Ezekiel 34:11-24

Scripture
I will be like a shepherd looking for his scattered flock. I will find my sheep and rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on that dark and cloudy day.

Observation
The Lord promises to come and search for his lost sheep. He will bring them back to Israel. He will feed them and provide lush pastures for them.

However, He will also judge those who are fat because they have enriched themselves at the expense of others. They have trampled the pastures and muddied the water so others cannot eat and drink.

The Lord promises to send David as a king over His people to unite them and lead them in the ways of the Lord.

Application
Promise of restoration for the people also comes with a promise of judgement.

God is not saying that He is against people being rich. Hid anger is against those who gain wealth by denying it to others.

Perhaps this is about locking up resources such as agricultural land. It could be about unfair wages.

In our times, it's not easy to discern our own role in this. We all think we are the “scrawny lambs” but in world standards we are the super-rich, the fat ones.

To what extent are my daily conveniences purchased at the expense of the poor in my own country or overseas?

How can I work to make things fairer for workers at the bottom of the heap?

There is a promise of salvation here. The Lord will raise up a king like David to rule over His people under the direction of the Lord.

As we seek to allow Jesus to reign over every part of our lives, we will see Him take charge of the issues that seem too big for us to overcome.

Prayer
Lord may I not take advantage of others in my daily walk. Let me be mindful of the sufferings of others and help me to see how you are leading me to make other people's lives better. Amen.
