Reflection on Isaiah 40:1-11

Scripture
Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power.
He will rule with a powerful arm.
See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.
He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
He will carry the lambs in his arms,
holding them close to his heart.
He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.

Observation
God's kingdom is coming, Jerusalem's desolation will end.

Someone shouts in the wilderness to make straight the road for the Lord. A voice calls out that people are like grass but God's word lives for ever.

The mighty king is coming who will tenderly rule over the nation like a good shepherd.

Application
God's Kingdom, seen at a distance by Isaiah is a present reality for us.

The glory of the Lord has been revealed unexpectedly in the form of a human being.

The mighty King has come and he is still carrying us like a shepherd carries a lamb.

As we head towards Christmas we celebrate not “Your God is coming”, but “Our God is with us.”

Prayer
Blessed be your name Lord God. You have come and made your home amongst us. Help me to live in the powerful realisation that God s here. Amen.
