Scripture
John was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.

Observation
God sent John to tell the world about the coming of the Christ.

The Pharisees send priests to question John about his identity. John tells them clearly that he is not the Messiah. Nor is he Elijah. Rather he is the one preparing the way of the Lord. But the Messiah is among them and is far greater than John.

Application
John saw very clearly that his ministry was about another not himself. John, for all his eccentric style and controversial preaching, was no there to draw attention to himself.

John's life and ministry were about pointing people to the coming of Jesus.

Sometimes we need to be reminded- it is not about me.

Paul tells us we were bought at a price and so our lives are no longer our own. Our whole life must now be spent in service to the one who bought our freedom.

I am not the light. I am a witness to tell others about the light.

Prayer
Father I acknowledge that too often my thoughts centre on me and on what pleases me. Help me to be like John the Baptist and understand that it's not about me- it's all about you. Amen.
