Scripture
“I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.”
Observation
God sends the angel Gabriel to Nazareth to tell Mary about the forthcoming conception of her baby.
Mary will conceive and give birth to a baby to be called Jesus. He will be great- the Son of the Most High.
Mary asks, “How will this be?” to which Gabriel responds that the Holy Spirit will come upon her.
Mary's reply to this is “I am the Lord's servant. May it come to me as you have said.”
Application
Mary must have been puzzled, worried and confused by all of this.
In a society where single mothers were despised, her life in a small village was going to be complicated. What would Joseph make of all of this? Her family and friends?
Yet she simply accepted that whatever the angel's message really meant for her future, she would walk the path laid out for her by God.
There is a model for us to note here. In our individualistic culture we are taught to question authority- even God's. We can spend a whole lot of time questioning, even resisting God.
The time comes though when we have to accept, surrender and even rejoice in God's plan for our life- even if it's not what we would choose for ourselves.
Prayer
Lord grant to me a heart that says sincerely “I am the Lord's servant.” Amen.
