Whiny Activism

Three Australian men boarded a Japanese whaling vessel this week to protest against whaling. They were promptly arrested and threatened with being sent to Japan for trial.

The problem with that plan was the season is just getting underway and the vessel was not going to abort its mission. That would leave a boat with three unwanted pirates onboard and the Japanese and Australian Governments with an irritation for the next few months.

A bit of whining and diplomacy and the whalers agree to hand them over to Australian authorities at some stage when it's possible to get an Australian ship to the whaling fleet hundreds of kilometres offshore.

What amused me was that the group behind these blokes, called Forest Rescue and we all know how whaling damages those ocean forests, said this "These people play the game hard and we are going to play hard also."

Yeah right. Play hard, and then whine to the Government when you lose so they can rescue you.

That's the Australian way I guess.Especially for environmentalists with names like Panda Broad (true story).

  1. Probably. We hear more about it when Aussies get into trouble overseas. I get annoyed when people travel into war zones and then expect the Government to evacuate them at taxpayers' expense when they get into trouble. The other one is that people take drugs into Asia or buy them there, knowing that a life sentence or the death penalty apply in those places, and then there is an expectation that the law shouldn't apply to them.
