Reflection on 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Scripture
God bought you with a high price. So you must honour God with your body.

Observation
While it's true that we are forgiven in Christ, this is no excuse for licentiousness. We may do anything we choose but we must not become a slave to anything..

Food is a gift from God, but we must not devote ourselves to is.

Sexual sin is in a different category to other sins. Our bodies are temples for the Holy Spirit and to join our bodies to another, we join our spirits to them, defiling the temple if it is done in a way that displeases God.

We are not free in that sense to do what we please. We have been bought at a great price and therefore we need to honour God with every part of our lives.

Application
We live in a highly sexualised culture and it is easy to align our morals with the culture's values.

We are free in one sense from the power of sin and the demands of religious law. Butt his is not a licence to do what we like.

Paul gives four reasons why we need to be careful of sexual sin in particular:

1. Not everything is good, even if it is natural. We have been set free, so we need to avoid being enslaved again by our desires.

2. Sexual sin is a sin against our body which is a temple for the Holy Spirit.

3. Our liberty comes at the high price of God's Son. Therefore we owe it to God to honour Him in all we do,

4. As children of eternity we need to focus on eternal values and goals and not merely on the things that appeal to our flesh.

Prayer
Lord, please teach me how to live a life dedicated to you in every way. Amen.
