Scripture
But to those who are called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Observation
the message of the cross is foolish to those who refuse to heed it. We who are being saved know otherwise.
People value their wisdom, but human wisdom is far short of God's so-called foolishness and human strength is far weaker than God's weakness.
People will not receive the gospel because it doesn't fit their preconceptions of what God should be like. The cross is offensive to the Jews and just plain stupid to the Gentiles.
Application
I read this morning that it costs on average $1.5 million to make a single convert in the USA. The writer of the article said even a huge company like Apple could not afford that kind of marketing strategy. But, he went on to say, the church is not a corporation selling a product. We are more than that.
We can soften the gospel, make it more user-friendly, take away the offence of the cross, and thus be more effective.
But we are servants of a God who is more interested in redeeming sinners than in market share, in recreating a broken world than in selling a product.
We know the cross is foolish to the world, but for us it is God's way of salvation and therefore infinitely valuable.
Prayer
Lord help me to be faithful in walking in your ways, in serving you in the calling you have for me and in witnessing to a gospel that many see as foolish but which is life to those who receive it. Amen.
amen, good word. and some do "soften the gospel". but as you've probably heard it said, "we're to change our lives to fit the Bible, not change the Bible to fit our lives"
