Reflection on Hebrews 5:4-10

Scripture
Even though Jesus was God's Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered.

Observation
No one can be a high priest simply because they want to be- they must be called and appointed by God.

Jesus did not honour himself by assuming he would be high priest. Rather he was chosen by the Father.

Jesus interceded for us on earth and became the sacrifice for all who would obey him.

Application
For us who are so distant from the Jewish sacrificial system this passage is hard to understand. The argument is that we have a new covenant that supersedes the old one and, in the same way that Aaron was appointed by God to be high priest of the old covenant, Jesus is appointed high priest in the new.

Jesus is our high priest ans our atoning sacrifice.

The high priest took the sacrifice into the presence of God, representing all the people in God's holy place.

In the same way, Jesus now stands in our place before God, taking away our guilt.

Prayer
Jesus you are my high priest. I thank you that in you my sin is forgiven. Amen.

  1. in thinking upon this Reflection, it seems to me, and correct me if I'm wrong, but in the far past I've read somewhere that the whole concept of the Jewish people has been changed through the years, and has changed radically. before, they would not dare to try to approach God apart from the sacrifices and the priest. but the Jews today feel that they have direct access to God and that is why they don't believe they need Jesus Christ. just needing a little perspective on the matter.

  2. I haven't heard that before. My understanding is that they do not believe Jesus is the Messiah and they are still awaiting him.

  3. your understanding has always been my knowledge too, i just read that somewhere and it came to mind. regardless though, even though they are still awaiting their Messiah, Jesus is and will be their finally realized Messiah in time to come.
