Reflection on Luke 24:35-49

Scripture
“I will send the Holy Spirit just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”

Observation
The two disciples who had encountered the risen Lord on the road to Emmaus tell their stories to the gathered disciples. As they are telling it, Jesus appears in the room.

The people are startled, believing he is a ghost. Jesus reassures them and tells them to look at his hands and feet and to touch him.

Finally he shows them how the scriptures had foretold his suffering, death and resurrection.

Application
We often say “seeing is believing” but it is clear that even when we see something with our own eyes, our preconceptions works a s a filter that blinds us to the truth.

Jesus is alive not dead.

There is an eternity that goes beyond this material existence.

God is love.

To understand these facts we must first believe and then we will see.

Prayer
Open my heart Lord and help me to trust you more. For the things I do not yet understand grant me faith. Amen.
