Reflection on Acts 1:15-15, 21-26

Scripture
Then they prayed, “Lord you know everyone's heart. Show us which one of these you have chosen.”

Observation
This passage is shortly before Pentecost. The group number 120.

While it was necessary for Judas to fulfil prophecy by betraying Jesus, the time has come to replace him as an apostle.

So they select two men- Justus and Matthias. Then they pray and use lots to select the new apostle. Matthias is chosen.

Application
Some time after this event, the Holy Spirit is poured out on all the believers. Everything changes at Pentecost.

1. Although using lots was approved in the Old Testament, it was never again used in the early church. We have the mind of God and therefore have no need for such intermediaries.

2. The idea of a quote for apostles is done away with. After this passage Matthias does not appear again. Paul is appointed an apostle as are others without reference to the need for 12 only.
With the Holy Spirit everything moves from structure to relationship, from rigidity to flexibility. This is the way the church needs to be today.

Prayer
Father please renew the church and my personal walk with you. May both be led entirely by your Spirit. Amen.
