Scripture
“I'm not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.”
Observation
It is the night of Jesus' betrayal. He prays for his disciples through the ages.
Jesus came from the Father and will soon return to the Father. He prays that we will be protected in the world, united to one another as He and the Father are one.
Jesus does not ask that we be taken out of the world but that we be kept safe from the evil one. He asks that we be made holy by God's truth.
Application
Jesus has three basic desires for us His followers:
1. Protection from the evil one as we walk in the world.
2. Unity as strong as the love that exists between Jesus and the Father.
3. Holiness- that we reflect the true nature of God.
Jesus does not want us removed from the world. We are to be in the world witnessing to God's kingdom. As we engage in this risky mission He guarantees to protect us along the way as we trust and obey Him.
Prayer
Lord you call me to be in the world nut not of it, to walk in the world without being contaminated by sin. Please protect me from all the seductions of the world so that I remain wholly dedicated to you. Amen.
