Scripture
They were terrified and asked one another, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him.”
Observation
After teaching all day, Jesus instructs the disciples to cross the lake and go to the other side.
A huge storm blows up, terrifying the disciples. Jesus remains asleep through this. They wake him up, and he stills the storm with a word.
Jesus then rebukes the disciples for their lack of trust. Now the disciples are even more scared, seeing the nature of Jesus' authority.
Application
Faith is about whether we really trust Jesus to bring us through our storms, whether literal or metaphorical.
Do I really trust that God has the power to save me in the middle of the crisis or not? Where do I put my trust?
I love the response of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego before being thrown into the fiery furnace. “Our God is able to save and he will rescue us. But even if he does not we will not bow to your idols.”
With Jesus we have no need to fear. He is able to bring us through any situation. And even if the waves engulf us, He will take us safely through death.
Prayer
Lord Jesus you are the one I trust. Strengthen my faith through life's storms and help me to trust you regardless of what comes. Amen.
