Reflection on Mark 5:21-43

Scripture
Jesus said, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

Observation
After delivering the demonised man, Jesus crosses the lake again. Jairus, a synagogue leader, comes to Jesus and begs him to heal his dying daughter.

A woman subject to bleeding for 12 years pushes through the crowd to touch Jesus' garment. She is healed immediately.

Jesus realises that power has flowed out of him and asks who touched him. The woman comes and falls at his feet. Jesus pronounces her healing.

Some men then come from Jairus' house with the news that his daughter has died. But Jesus tells Jairus to believe. Jesus takes Peter, James and John to Jairus' house. There he raises the daughter to life.

Application
the power of Jesus to heal and to save is far greater than we imagine. A woman with an incurable condition is healed in an instant by just touching his garment. A girl who has died is raised to life at a word from the creator.

Often we don't take Jesus' power and desire to heal into account. It's far more reasonable to go to the doctor before we think of praying.

Fear too often holds us back from approaching God in this way. The woman is terrified when Jesus asks who touched him. Somehow we fear being found out by God, even when we experience his grace. Jesus wants to commend her faith and to seal the healing, but this woman fears condemnation- so much like us.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to approach you confidently trusting in your kindness. Amen.
