Reflection on Mark 6:1-13

Scripture
They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

Observation
Jesus returns to Nazareth with his disciples. On the Sabbath, he teaches in the synagogue. People are amazed at his authority, but because they knew him and his family they become offended at him.

The result is that he cannot do any miracles there and only do a few healings.

So Jesus starts travelling from village to village. He sends out the Twelve in pairs. They go out teaching that people should repent. They cast out demons and heal the sick.

Application
Jesus on his worst day, amongst an unbelieving people, can only heal a few people.

The disciples, early in Jesus' ministry, are sent out to preach and they find that they can heal the sick and cast out demons in the authority of Jesus.

We who have the advantage of hindsight and the infilling of the Holy Spirit struggle to see people healed.

The solution to this is not to work harder or pray more. We need to deepen our trust in Jesus, listening to the Holy Spirit and obeying Him.

Prayer
Lord please help me to depend entirely on you. Help me to reach out in faith to share the Good News, to heal the sick and release the captives. Amen.
