Reflection on 2 Samuel 6:1-19

Scripture
David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.

Observation
David chooses thirty men to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim to Jerusalem. They put the ark on to a new cart and proceed on the road with celebration.

Along the way the oxen stumble and Uzzah reaches out to steady the ark. God strikes him dead.

David is angry and goes home, but hears reports of God blessing the household where the ark has been left. So he resumes the project of returning it to Jerusalem. This time the ark is carried as required by the Law.

There is great celebration and praise. David himself dances before the ark with all his might. Finally the ark is placed in the tent of worship.

Application
Worship can at times be a very exuberant affair, even unruly under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. In this passage we have noisy music, sacrifices and joyous dancing.

David cared more for his relationship with the Lord than he did about the dignity of his office as king.

Not everyone is as exuberant as David in their personality. But we should all be as enthusiastic and emotionally invested in worship as David was.

If we truly love our God we will express that in worship.

Prayer
Father God please give me the ability to worship you as I should. Amen.
