Scripture
King Herod heard about this for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
Observation
Jesus' fame spreads as far as King Herod. Herod believes that Jesus is a resurrection of John the Baptist.
Earlier Herod had John killed at the request of his daughter Herodias. Herodias had danced at a birthday banquet in Herod's honour, and he had foolishly offered her anything she asked. At her mother's urging she requested the head of John on a platter.
Application
This passage is a grim reminder that being faithful to God will generate opposition. Following Jesus will bring pain and sometimes even severe suffering.
However, Jesus promises to not abandon us, but to walk with us in timed of suffering. He even promises his blessing when we suffer for his name. He will be with us even to the end of the age.
The Bible is realistic about the power of wicked people to afflict the saints. It is also realistic about the power of God to strengthen His people.
Prayer
Father I thank you for the assurance that you are always with me. Help me to absolutely trust in you. Amen.
