Scripture
“Your house and your kingdom will endure for ever before me; your throne will be established forever.”
Observation
David determines to build a temple for the Lord. At first Nathan the prophet thinks this is a good idea, but that night the Lord speaks to Nathan.
The Lord is to establish a house for David, not the other way around.
The Lord raised David up from being a shepherd to being the king. He will establish His people in the land and keep them safe.
The Lord is to establish a house for David and He will raise up a son for him who will build the Temple for the Lord. The Lord will establish David's kingdom for ever.
Application
David's heart was for the Lord. He wished to serve God with every part of his being. Part of that desire was to build a Temple for the Lord, a place for God to dwell.
The Lord made it clear that this was not David's task or calling.
As christians there are many good things for us to do, many noble tasks, even godly vocations.
The important question is this: What does God require of me?
God's calling varies from person to person. He gifts each of us differently to equip us for our various callings. We must not seek to do that which God has reserved for others.
Prayer
Lord you have made me unique for a unique purpose. Help me to discern the purpose of my life and to walk in the path you have called me to walk. Amen.
