Scripture
During his life time Absalom had built a monument to himself, for he said, “I have no sons to carry on my name.” He named the monument Absalom's Monument and it is called that until today.
Observation
David's son Absalom is leading a rebellion against David. David sends out an army with instructions to deal gently with Absalom.
Absalom comes across some of David's troops in the forest. Absalom rides off on his mule, but he becomes entangles in trees. Joab kills Absalom.
The message of Absalom's death comes back to David who is overwhelmed by grief for his son.
Application
David is a man of great emotion. The fact that his son has been fighting against him doesn't stop him from grieving over him.
If David lamented the death of a rebellious son, how much greater is God's grief over those who refuse his love?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank you that despite the many ways I rebel against your reign, your love for me never fails. Please help me to live in the constant awareness of your love. Amen.
