Reflection on Mark 9:38-50

Scripture
“Everyone will be salted with fire.”

Observation
John reports that someone who is outside of their group has been casting out demons in the name of Jesus. Jesus is quite relaxed about this and says that anyone who is not against Him is for Him. Nobody who ministers in the name of Jesus is going to speak against Him.

He goes on to say that if anyone causes a “little one” to sin they will be punished severely. We each need to make sure that we cut off any part of our body that causes us to sin.

Everyone will be salted with fire. In other words we all face cleansing and purification.

Application
There can be something of a temptation for us to work out who is “in” and who is “out”. We want to know who is really saved and who is really preaching the true gospel.

Jesus puts a dampener on such things. He is really saying here that it's not up to us to make these judgements. People can preach in His name, but they will be judged very severely if they lead others away from Him.

Prayer
Father, lease help me to leave to you the judgements about who is saved. Help me rather to serve you and all people humbly. Amen.
