Reflection on Job 2:1-10

Scripture
Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all if this Job said nothing wrong.

Observation
Job has previously lost all his sons and daughters and his wealth in one day at the hand of satan who is trying to prove that Job is not really righteous.

The angelic beings now come before the throne of God. God boasts about his servant Job, but satan arrogantly says that if Job becomes ill then he will curse God.

God gives satan permission to strike at Job's health, and Job is covered in painful boils. Job's wife tries to cajole Job into cursing God but Job refuses.

Application
This is, in some ways, a difficult passage to understand, but we can be confident of three things:

1. God does not condemn His children. God was boasting about Job's goodness. We need to appreciate God's great love for us. He is not up there looking for a chance to smite us. He really does love us like a good Father.

2. It is satan who condemns not God. Satan is called the Accuser. He is the one speaking bad things about us, not God.

3. Sickness does not come from God but from satan. God is a healing God. He does not inflict suffering on us.

Prayer
Father I thank you for your great love- love beyond measure. Please help me to receive your love in all its fullness. Amen.
